Hello,
I am doing a project for American History on the Vietnam War. For my
assignment I need to interview some people that were born before 1960 and
remember the details of the Vietnam War. I have listed some questions
below, but any additional information would be helpful.
Thanks!

Questions for those that fought in the war:
. Where did you fight in Vietnam?
. Where did you serve?
. Who did you serve with?
. Did you receive any honors?
. Does you have any unusual stories?
. Describe a typical day during the war?
. What was your job?
. Do you remember the media coverage and protests? If so, explain what
the affects were on the person.
. What were the differences between a Vietnam Veteran and a WWII Veteran?
(Focusing on the type of war, and the treatment of soldiers.)

Questions for those that did not serve during the war:
. What memories do you have from the war?
. Where were you during the war?
. Did you have any family members or friends in the war?
. What was your job during the war?
. Do you remember the actions of others during the war?
. What was it like in the United States during the time of the Vietnam War?
. Do you remember anything unusual happening at home during the Vietnam
War?
. Do you remember the media coverage and protests? If so, explain what
the affects were on the person.
. What were your reactions to the Vietnam War?
. What were the differences between a Vietnam Veteran and a WWII Veteran?
(Focusing on the type of war, and the treatment of soldiers.)

I called up my padre (my dad) and here's what he told me:

What memories do you have from the war? It was a time of being scared and fighting really. EIther you fought the war, fought against the war, or were scared b/c you were headed over there.

. Where were you during the war? I was in Ohio

. Did you have any family members or friends in the war? no, no family but I did have a friend who went over. He got killed in the war.

. What was your job during the war? I did construction work. Mainly framing houses and some electrical work

. What was it like in the United States during the time of the Vietnam War? It was like I stated before, it was a mixed time of being scared or fighting.

. Do you remember anything unusual happening at home during the Vietnam War? (laughs) yeah, When they did the draft in the town where i lived it was a small town, I almost got called into the draft. The number below mine got called. I was scared really.

. Do you remember the media coverage and protests? If so, explain what
the affects were on the person. The protests were everywhere. From anti-war activists to hippies. EVERYONE seemed to protest in one way or another.

. What were your reactions to the Vietnam War? I thought it was a useless war, but I would have gone if I was drafted in.

. What were the differences between a Vietnam Veteran and a WWII Veteran?
(Focusing on the type of war, and the treatment of soldiers.)
That's a tough one. I'd have to say that WWII vets were more "proud" of having served. They wern't "ashamed" of having fought.

Ladies and gentlemen, that was my father, Donald.

I was a kid during that time, but I remember the graphic pictures that were in Life Magazine every week. My dad was in the National Guard and although his unit ended up not going over, they were called to handle the riots at Ohio State University and Kent State University. I remember the things that were said in school about Kent State. I remember being angry because there are two sides to every story but since the war was not "popular" we weren't encouraged to talk about the "other" side.

My sister was inches away from joining the Navy to be a nurse but Dad discouraged her because he didn't want her to go thru the crap (like he did) from people who thought all military were baby killers.
