Is it possible to return a video game that the wrap was opened on and played for about 3 minutes once and was purchased a week ago from Game Stop?

I know this is probably a dumb question but I figure it doesn't hurt to ask. What happened is I bought Battlefield 3 for my son. Apparently, he wanted Modern Warfare 3 and I was confused. He opened it on his birthday 5 days ago, but didn't want to hurt my feelings and tell me it was the wrong game. So he decided to open it and play it and perhaps he would like it. Well, he played it for about 3 minutes and realized none of his friends have it so he couldn't play with them online and he got sad. When I asked him what was the matter, he confessed that it was the wrong game and he was wondering if we could exchange it. (I know I know, he shouldn't have unwrapped it, but he's 11, it was his birthday, and he is such a sweetie, he didn't want to be ungrateful for the gift.) So, has anyone attempted to return an opened game?

Okay, don't judge, but..

A few years back, i bought a movie from walmart, took it home, it ended up NOT being what i thought it would be. what i did was: brought it back to walmart, stated that it was skipping, and all i wanted to do was "swap it out for the exact same thing." they understood, and they said that i was able to so a simple swap.

well, i did the swap, and viola: i had a movie in the packaging, still. at THAT point, i was able to #1, bring it to a different walmart, #2, return it to target, or some other store for a swap-out, & #3, rot in "he'll" for bending the rules of the system so tight that they pretty much snapped.. :rotfl:

you are most liekyl out of luck. What the above poster did most likely will not work with a game becuase on somethnig like battlefield reatialers have "exclusive" content that only theire games come with in the form of codes for downloadable content. Most of the time if you say a game in unplay able, gamestop will want to confirm that in store on thier system and then replace it with another copy, minus the downloadable content codes that came with the original. Once a game has been opened and played you usually cannot return it. If he is truly not going to play it, you could likely git $20-$30 trade in credit at gamestop for it. The longer you wait to trade it in, the less it will be worth.

Unfortunately, you can't return it since it has been opened. :(

BUT, you will be able to sell it easily on Craigslist for more than you could "trade it in" for at a game store. You will be able to get very close to the price you paid for it (if you got it on sale) through Craigslist. My husband and I have sold tons of stuff on there, including video games, furniture, etc.

"princessmom" is right-- i completely forgot about restricted material on the games. the place you bought it from may be thinking that you bought the game just for the freebies that come with the initial purchase. big bummer. :( *also, i'd like to make mention that i did the movie swap thing in college, and i am not 100% proud of it.. only a little bit, because hey, that's pretty creative thinking for a poor college kid.. ;)

You can trade it in at Gamestop. It is a newer game so you will probably get a decent credit for it. Then, you can try to get the new game your son wanted instead.

I have purchased many used games from Gamestop. They come with a 30 day warranty, I believe. Also, if you watch the ads, they sometimes will give you extra credit for games on certain weekends.

Just looked on Gamestop's website: They are giving an additional 50% instore credit from a trade toward the purchase of a preowned game from now until 1/8/12. Battlefield 3 is a guaranteed $30 credit too! (which is pretty darned good because that game was on sale BF from Wally world for $28)

I agree take it to Gamestop and trade it in for a used Modern Warfare. Our local Gamestop had multiple copies the other day.

COMPLETELY off topic but I wanted to vent on this. After last week I wouldn't feel bad at all about doing what you did!! UGH!! I bought 4 Lalaoopsy dolls for my friends girls. Those Holly Sleighbells ones. They were so cute. But I talked to my one friend and she said neither her or my other friends girls like dolls, just Barbies. So I took the dolls back to Walmart. Perfectly fine, not anything wrong with them. The lady returned them for me no problem, but she marked EVERY ONE OF THEM as DAMAGED :confused3 What the heck!? They were brand new, so cute, she put the damaged label across them, taped them REAL good and put them in the damaged cart. :sad2: I was so mad, what a waste. I no longer feel bad for the companies about ANYTHING

GAME sTOP IS PRETTY EASY TO WORK WITH.... Was it a new game or preowned? I think Game stop is giving 30 days for Christmas and will give store credit

I just bought a movie from Walmart and when we got home to watch it, it was skipping, so back up to Walmart I went to exchange it. They easily exchanged it, but took the wrapper off the new one. I asked why they did this and she said they do it for games/movies so that people don't return the new one.

This was the first time I had experienced that.

WOW-- it's probably because of people like me, back in the college years;( LOL-- that's crazy. what i'd do is either go back to a different walmart, or go to a target.. target's better about it, but you only get a swap out for the EXACT SAME THING.. unless it's wrapped, then you can just get a gift card for anything in the store. *shrugs*

they mark them damaged, and then they get checked out before sent back to the floor.. a lot of stuff that gets returned at walmart will get marked damaged, even if its not, but most of it is fine and will be resold...

also, i think they re-wrap it themselves. the plastic never quite looks the same as when it's "brand new." ya know what i mean??:goodvibes

But the dolls are in a thin cardboard box with plastic showing the doll. The cardboard would be ruined after putting the packaging tape over it. My BIL was just here last night, he works part time for Sears and he said they do the same thing. If you return something they mark it as damaged and return it to the manufacturer (or company, whatever) no matter what. Even brand new things. Crazy.

Thanks all for your feedback....I have not had time to go back to the store, but I will try tonight. I didn't even think about swapping it for a used MW3. That would probably come out the same money-wise. I'll let you know what happens.

I just saw a special about this on television this week when they were talking about all the holiday gift returns. Said that a lot go to the manufacturer or outlet stores.

That was standard procedure back when I worked for Gamestop in 03. Not every employee does it, but they're supposed to open the new game if you're returning it because of damage.

Open games can only be exchanged for the exact same game, for a defective reason only. The same goes for a lot of electronic stuff, especially on PC games. You have to make sure your computer are up to specs to run the game prior to purchasing it. It's not the store's fault you don't have a good enough computer.

Walmart does not reshrink wrap games. And you can tell a store deal wrap over a professional machine wrap. We had to rewrap new games, since one or two games were gutted for store display.

Try to sell it on Craigslist over Gamestop, then get the game you want. And not having his friends online is a pretty poor excuse to not play a game. And at 11, why is he playing FPS? As an adult, I hate having little kids trying to play adult games.

It was much nicer when the system was $600 and only adults could afford the system. So only adults were online to play. Parent's weren't so keen to go out buy such an expensive system for kids. I'm all for playing games, and grew up with it. But games were always age appropriate. Even 15/16 is still pushing it for an FPS that's played online with several other adults.

Target has done the same thing.

Well, he is not allowed to play with adults or anyone he doesn't know....thus the need for his friends to be playing the same game online.
