Are you allowed to take a video camera on a flight???

someone said you cant take video cameras on ....jewlry has to be removed and put in luggage?

is this true :sunny: :Pinkbounc o

We have taken our video camera on and I have always worn my jewlrey on a plane, I would never take it off and put it in my luggage.

Never put anything of value in your luggage if you want to see it again. I would carry on the video camera and there is no problem wearing your jewelry on the plane.

Some metal detectors are very sensitive and you may have to take some of your jewelry off but you put it on after your pass through the scanner.

Camcorders are allowed. You can view approved and dis-approved items at www.tsa.gov

Always wear or put your jewelry in your carry on. Some jewelry can set off the metal detectors (costume jewelry), so you may wear just a few items to make sure that doesn't happen.

Have a great trip!

Like laptops, camcorders should be removed from their carrying bag and placed, in a tub, on the conveyor belt.

To make thing go more smoothly, I put all of my "metal" such as keys, watch, sunglasses, and wallet and put them in a front pocket of my carry on. I can then go through the metal detector without having to worry about that stuff. I can take it back out once I am through security and out of the way.

We flew last month with our camcorder with no problem. Boston's Logan Airport required the camcorder be removed from it's bag when you went through the scanners, while Atlanta's did not.

Philadelphia wanted camcorders but not still cameras removed from bags. Seeing as how most digitals also take videos (mine can do a full twenty minutes of video!), again your tax dollars being wasted by idiots without a clue making arbitrary decisions.

NEVER check ANYTHING of value, medications or medical devices, or travel documents.

Anne, I totally agree. Some of the rules make no sense. I am glad I don't have to take my camera out of the bag though. I carry lots of equipment that I don't want to advertise so someone wants to steal it.

VERY IMPORTANT - If you have 800MM film for your camera, let them know in advance. (I always have as a carry on because x-rays of luggage can ruin film.) Anyway, for 800MM film, they don't send through x-ray and they do a swab test for any chemicals (such as sulfer, etc.). They give the camera back to you on the other side when they are done. :mickeybar

800MM film?

You mean 800 ASA (speed)?

I always, bring my cameras in my carryon backpack I usually call it my "gadget pack". Usually contains, my Camcorder, Camera, iPod, and Laptop.

Last time I left Boston, the bag screener pulled my bag off the belt and took me with it over to the side, I was there for about 15 minutes. He opened my bag, turned everything on then off again, and then put everything back in my bag.

-- I travel with all this equipment all the time out of Boston, and it's the first time I've ever been stopped.

Will see if happens again on 7/4.

is there any danger to a digital camera or laptop going through the xray?

No problems with sending your laptop and digital camera through the scanner. I do it all the time with no problems.

When you bring your Laptop you remove it from it's carrying case and place it in a bin by itself to go through the machine separately. I keep my Cameras tho in my backpack and I've never had to take them out.

PS I see your one day ahead of me in the countdown race.......... Have a great Trip!

In every airport I have been in, there are large signs telling you to remove your laptop from the bag. TSA officers are sure to remind you as you walk up. If they are not doing this in Logan, then I guess it is still behind the times with security trends.

Most airports have a TSA person screaming take your laptop out of your bag. It's funny because at most airports most frequent fliers are standing there holding their laptop and their shoes because they know the drill.

I don't think it's the capability of capturing video that they're worried about. Don't be so sure that this was a decision made arbitrarily by an idiot. I thought this was curious when we flew out of Philadelphia, too.

But there could be something signficant about camcorders that makes them a screening priority. It may be the wiring or motors that drive the tape. They may need to come out because they're too complicated to evaluate if there's any obscuration by anything else they're packed with. (And by removing the camorder, it make it easier to evaluate what's left in the luggage, too!) It may only be certain models that are of any concern, but they're not going to say, "If you've got a Sony Handycam 3000XYZ or a Canon ZR8000, please remove it from your luggage and place it in a bin."

There may have even been some sort if intellegence that specifically implicated camcorders as a higher risk item.

This is not to say that it wasn't an arbitrary decision made by an idiot....just that I wouldn't automatically jump to that conclusion.

My "electronics" carry-on got swabbed at MCO, BTW. I think we had two digital camcorders and a mini-DV camcorder.

Good thing I looked at the list of prohibited items!
I'll be sure to leave my plastic explosives and spearguns at home. :earseek:

Sorry for the snip quote but this made me wonder. Do you know what they swab or and why or what prompts it?

Reason I ask is because on a trip last year my 7yo's backpack was swabbed. They were very nice but I am curious as it didn't have much in it, books, snacks, crayons etc. The walkman, DVD player and game boys were in DH's - we also do an electroncs dedicated bag as its easier to remove things if necessary. That bag, with the electronics, was not swabbed - weird huh.

Back on topic, yes we remove our camcorder, laptob or dvd player if traveling with them and put them in the bin For us it is just easier than having to backtrack to do this. We also remove shoes as well place all jewlery, watches and keys into a designated pocket in my carry on.

Most times the swab is totally random. Other times they may have seen something that concerned them and so they swab looking for explosive debris.
