Video - 3 yo girl falls through fence on cliff *she is ok*

That poor little thing! Thank goodness she was okay. I don't think it's the park's fault. I recently went hiking in the Smokies with my ds, 8. When we got to to top, I was probably leaving handprints in his arm. When we got to the pinnacle, 30 feet of rock face, I said- No way. He got mad and pouted at me for half the way down! He said- Can I ever go all the way to the top? I said- No. Not even when you are an adult!

My DH laughs when I am so neurotic about kids and railings but this is exactly why. And it is not the park's fault imo. Parents and people need to take ownership of their own actions. Don't let a little kid stand alone next to something like that. This is why I told my DH we will never take our family to the Grand Canyon, I'd be a nervous wreck the entire trip! LOL!

This is why my kids say I'm 'overprotective'... I wont' let them go NEAR the edge of ANYTHING.... this is my fear.....
I dont' blame the mom like alot have... and I dont' necessarily blame the parks either. It's just sad that it will take a tragedy or two before anyone takes more precautions about it...

How did the mom keep video taping?? I would have probably broken my video camera throwing it out of the way to run and get my daughter.

Exactly! I can't believe she is still filming while her daughter is falling! I would have just dropped the camera to run for my daughter. I think my daughter is much more important than video taping my daughter falling off the cliff and possibly getting killed.

IMO, she may have kept video taping b/c she was so shocked. It's hard to say why people do certain things under durress. Or she may have been taking stills?

FTR, they said on the Today show this am that the family is NOT going to sue, but publicized the tape in the hopes of improving safety at that park. A rail in the middle would protect against just he sort of accident that nearly happened, and I see no reason why that precaution shouldn't be taken. Sure, many parents want to be protected rather than protecting themselves, but I just think the way that fence is is an accident waiting to happen. I'd be , esp with a 3yo, but it's not that uncommon for people to take pictures just like that, with everyone's back to the scenery.

I hear you. When we went on the hike I talked about, we ended up 1700 feet up. I made ds walk on the mountain,rather than tree lined drop off side of me. I held his hand so tightly it might have turned blue! I was sweating just seeing others scrambling around the top of the mountain. This isn't WDw, people, this mother nature- there are warnings, and all, but not lap belts or harnesses!

When I said I don't blame the park, that doesn't mean I blame the mother. It was an accident. It is nobody's fault. I am sure she didn't think something bad would happen and I also think she didn't drop the camera because she was in shock and the dd was pulled back up a second after it happened.

My 3yo's back to a 100ft shear drop is not going to happen on my watch.
That is stupidity.

That was my thought.

I couldn't imagine letting my kid pose for a picture at the edge of a sheer drop. Plus, the kids were climbing on that "fence" earlier in the video....not smart.

On the news they just said the parks are looking into sturdier fences. The fence never failed- it looks like it was supposed to be a barrier and not 1 100% impenetrable fence.
This kind if thing leads to less access for all of us trying to enjoy nature. How much $ are they going to spend on preventing parents from stupid things that could have gone to better the area.

There are beautiful sights and sites, all over the United States. The Kalalau Trail on Kauai is not fenced in. At the end of the first two miles of the trail on the beach is a sign detailing the number of deaths from drowning in the area. Don't let your kids play in the waves. Waipio Valley is not fenced in. Waimea Canyon, the Grand Canyon, Glacier Point at Yosemite is not fenced in and even more dangerous, Volcano National Park, where guests can wander out onto a lava bench that could collapse in a steamy death is not fenced in. Who should take precautions? Should the National and State Park Services have to guard against the distracted tourists, those with a "theme park mentality" who think nothing bad can happen on vacation, and parents who, for whatever reason do not exercise good judgement? Nature is dangerous. High places are dangerous. Oceans are dangerous. It is up to all of us to exercise caution. I do not want precautions taken at our national parks beyond a sign stating that falling two miles to the valley floor will result in death. At VNP, "Breathing volcanic fumes can result in asphixiation and death". "The sudden collapse of a lava bench will result in death". A shift in the wind may result in the "inhalation of sulfuric acid and death."

The mother is angry at the Park?????Are you kidding me??? She let the child lean against the two-slat, cliff rail for a cutesy picture, but it's the parks responsibility for not taking more precautions. People are amazing.

The list of people doing stupid things at national and state parks would fill a million books.

If all the things people wanted done to make parks "safe" it would cost so much that I hope people would be willing to pay $90 for a day at a state/national park.

I've been to Yellowstone so many times I echo Ron White - You can't fix stupid!

Really, the only way to keep people safe in nature is to fence off the parks from people, and let them sit on bences outside and watch films of the things inside. But even then some would fall off the bench and the rest would get splinters.

I have seen enough "stupid" to last me a life time at WDW. We were driving out of Shades of Green one afternoon when we saw a BIG ole aligator basking on the grass near the pond on the right side of the driveway. We stopped to look. Behind us a car load of teenage girls, ( I am ashamed to say that they are female) stopped, bounded out of the car and RAN to the alligator with a camera, hoping to get a picture of the alligator and THEM!!! Luckily the gator was smarter than the entire car load. It ran into the pond.
