Victoria and Albert's

As an introduction, neither I nor my spouse consider ourselves “foodies.” I’m not sure there is a common consensus on the term. We are empty nesters who dine out at least once a week. We have enjoyed meals at Shula’s, McCormick and Shmick’s, Sullivan’s, Ruth’s Chris, but Roy’s is our favorite. We appreciate great food and great service. We generally do not dress to the nines for dinner, just business casual.

We dined at Victoria and Albert’s for the first time last week. We were celebrating our 28th wedding anniversary. I dutifully read the advice offered here about the dress code, the food choices, the wine pairings, etc.

Well, in one word…disappointing. On many levels.

We arrived and were seated exactly at our reservation time. Then we sat and looked around the room for a while. It was at least five minutes (no big deal in TRW but I expected more here) before a server introduced herself. I think we were offered a choice of water and told our other server would return with menus.
I had done extensive research (like any other disser) and knew about the amuse bouche and the selections, etc.

OK, first let down of the night. Our other server described the courses and pushed the wine pairings. We both were inclined to do the pairings, just for the experience. We always have wine with dinner. We always order a bottle (or two; they cork it so you can take it home). Our daughter is a sommelier who recommends wine based on our palates. Based on older menus available online, she advised us that the choices were mixed, but we would like the variety. (We are no experts but we do swirl, sniff, and sip).

We both ordered the pairings, which seemed to me to lower our service level right away. Our male server seemed to be trying to stop rolling his eyes every time he was at our table.

The famed amuse bouch everyone raves about? Well, the four bites were good, but there was no theme. We had a panna cotta (another experience of poor service…when clearing the dishes this is the one flavor we couldn’t place. We asked about it and he literally dripped, “it’s a panna cotta” to which I responded yes, I know, but the flavor escapes me. “Cauliflower.” And exit.

The others were ahi tuna, mini lobster roll and a slice of beef with no explanation of the selections or why they were served together.
I’m running on so I’ll tell you my husband and I ordered different dishes for every course. Most were fantastic. I ordered the Australian “Kobe” beef for a $35 up charge. It was terrible. Full of sinew. The oxtail jus was the best part. I would have sent it back but by this point I truly believe the V & A staff and kitchen could give a crap about me and my husband.

We both had the soufflés for dessert. Me, chocolate; DH, grand marnier. I had such high hopes. Way back in the 80’s there was a fantastic restaurant in Trump Castle…an excellent French restaurant. Oh the soufflés! I’ve been trying to find that taste for twenty years. Sadly, this 5 star restaurant fell far short. I feel sad for all of you who believe this is the best of the best.
I will always go back to WDW, but V & A’s was a sad disappointment.

Forgot to add we asked for the wine menu. It was never brought. When our eye rolling server came to take our order, I asked if we could see the wine list before we ordered. Oh well, sure (roll eyes). Doesn't entice you to buy a wine you love for $$$ that actually retails for $50.

I hope you told all this to the proper people at Disney. I think they should be aware of this kind of treatment. You did a good job explaining your experience, send the message to them as well if you have not already. Thanks for the info.

Wow - sorry to hear about your experience here. I don't have plans to eat here any time soon but if I did, I would expect much more. That had to be very disappointing but I do appreciate the review. I'd hope to get amazing service here but it sounds like that's not always the case. Thanks for the review!

Thank you so much for this honest review! Recently my DH has gotten it into his head that we're going to be eating here soon. I've never had any interest in V&A, but he's becoming fixated. I'll definitely have him read this. You confirmed a lot of my fears about going there. I'd rather add another night to a stay at a deluxe resort than spend $300 on a so-so meal with servers who make me uncomfortable!

I'm truly sorry to hear about your bad experience. I do consider myself a "foodie", and my husband and I dined at V&A's for our anniversary last year, and I truly could find nothing to complain about if I tried. The service was impeccable, both of our servers paid incredible attention to detail, were extremely thorough and helpful, so funny and kind, and honestly paid almost too much attention to our needs and wants through the night (but just almost ;) ). I had the Kobe as well and it was superb. I *do* hope you said something to the staff there, because I'm sure they would be appalled by that kind of behavior, and wine pairing is not uncommon, so if that is how that server responded to you, chances are he will not be there long. It's too bad you had such a bad time, but for anyone reading this, please do not exclude V&A's from your consideration because of one or two bad reviews, not every meal of every service of every day is going to be perfect, people and restaurants make mistakes - the best thing you can do is speak up!

I appreciate your opinions. It just got to be so uncomfortable that we both just wanted to get out of there.

After the entrées but before the intermezzo they brought over an employee that was from our hometown. She was lovely and friendly but was clearly doing this as part of her job. How much could we share about a place she lived 20 years ago…

We don’t just dine at national chains. We seek out the chef/owner restaurants in our city. We love unique menus. Our favorite has a fantastic oxtail ragout, duck and rabbit dish and lots of fresh and original fish plates.

My biggest disappointment at V & A’s was the service. Was my cocktail dress (with a dressy sweater, it was cold) or my husband’s sport coat not up to the server’s standards?

It was the worst vibe/atmosphere we have experienced. We’ve never been to Europe, don’t even have passports. But we have dined at La Mer at Halekulani. A complete opposite in service. And truly an experience of a lifetime.

Should we write or call about our experience? I don’t want anything from them and it seems like another waste of my time.

I'm surprised to hear that you had a bad experience at V&A's. You might have the worst luck in the world when it comes to dining there. I have been over 20 times and have always had professional, attentive, and friendly service that complemented the typically high quality of the food. Of the times I have enjoyed the 'Kobe', I never found any sinew in the beef. It is usually full of a startling amount of marbling.
Perhaps the server was having an off night? I also dined with a party at V&A's last week, and we had fabulous service and food as always.

I hope that your bad experience does not put off anyone who was interested in going to V&A's, and that you have a more enjoyable experience if you decide to return. Although I admit it may not be a suitable experience for everyone, the quality of food and service at the restaurant is on par with any other five diamond location I have been to.

My DH & I dined there just last night and had a fabulous time. Service was excellent, and I felt of all the "upscale" places we've eaten, this was the least stuffy & snooty of them. Sorry your experience was not what you hoped.
