My DH (whom I love) really really really wanted to go to V&A, so we went in December and while I am not an adventuresome eater (I generally eat meat and potatoes, chicken, etc., basic American food, never eat fish), I figured I could "suck it up" for one night and eat there. I told myself that the chef is magnificent, so anything that was served would not only be prepared properly, but would likely be the most delicious way to prepare that item.
On the plus side, all of the items are small portions. I had oysters rockefeller, which consisted of one oyster shell, and something else -- I don't remember what, but there wasn't a lot of it. I've never eaten this before and I actually enjoyed it, but it's something I would never ordinarily seek to eat. I could find at least one thing on all of the courses that I was willing to try and because I don't eat fish at all, I did have a difficult time with the fish course, but ate half of what I'd selected. Everything else, I was able to eat all or most of.
That said, it is very expensive to eat there, so if you and your DH are not that thrilled about it, I agree that you and the other couple should split up for that night and let your friends eat there while you eat somewhere you'd prefer. But if you absolutely, positively have to eat there out of love as I did, I think going in with a positive attitude and willingness to try new things will get you through it. The staff is superb, the ambiance is lovely, and the experience is unforgettable.
