I realize that not all of us live in a house, but for us that do, many of us have a garage. Our garage is either attached or detached. For some, if the garage is attached or detached is big reason why they bought the house they did. Many will only have an attached garage and others only want a detached garage - both sets of people have valid reasons why. Below are the pros and cons of both types of garages……

I have lived with both attached and detached garages and both were good for the reasons posted above. What I’m wondering this morning is your current garage type now. So tell us today……

What type of garage do you have today?
Do you like it or wish you had the other type of garage?
(multiple choice)

For Me……Our house has an attached garage and I’m very glad this is what we have. I mentioned a few weeks ago that our refrigerator died, and we are currently still without one. Luckily, we have a fridge in the garage that we are using and if our garage was detached, that would be highly inconvenient. My house is an L shape, so I go out my front door and go right into the garage door. It’s still inconvenient to use the garage fridge, but not as bad as a detached garage. I grew up in a house with a detached garage and so did my DH. Both of us didn’t want that when we bought a house, so both our houses had an attached garage.

I have a detached garage, but I use it like a big glorified powered shed. You couldn't have a car in the garage and get it out past another car in the driveway, which renders the garage incompatible with car use for us.

Provides a lot of storage space though. Not having an actual shed, the outdoor storage is very nice. Doubled as a workroom for a few minor things too, but primarily it's just a very nice shed.

Our current house has an attached garage. I love it. The garage was built first and then attached to the house with a connecting breezeway. Our former house had a detached garage which was very inconvenient, especially in rain, snow, and other bad weather.

Attached / I’ve always had an attached to garage and would always want one I don’t care for the inconvenience of a detached garage it’s not for me ymmv
I also have a fridge in my garage and have often had to use it as my main refrigerator and I’m very thankful that it’s really close to the door that leads into my house because yes it is very inconvenient to have to use my garage fridge as my main refrigerator
But having an attached garage to meet is very convenient because that is the main means that is used to go in and out of my house we rarely use the front door 🚪

A 2-car attached garage was high on our list of "house needs" when we were house-hunting, 22 years ago. However, we live in an area where there aren't a lot of homes available (even back then) and houses sell quickly; sometimes 'agreements' are made before the house ever hits the market. We saw this house the second it hit the realtor lists and made a full offer while we were IN the house, checking it out. Not only was there no garage at all, but the driveway wasn't even paved. However, we needed a place to live and house/location were right for us, so we made the offer and the rest is history.

In the intervening years, we have had the driveway paved which makes snow shoveling so much better/easier. However, every single day in the winter I curse not having that 2 car attached garage.

When I bought my house it had a 1 car attached garage. My house was built in 1956 and the garage was tiny. You could pull a car in but could not open your door to get out. I used it to store my patio furniture in the winter.

I decided it was not a good use of space and 3 years ago when I resided the house I removed the garage door and sided where it was and put in a window.

This year we renovated the space. We opened the garage into the small room next to it. Turned the space into a family room with a bar, put in a laundry room and a second bathroom.

The house went from 1300 square feet to almost 2000. Best decision we made! Old family room is being converted to a dining room. I painted sample colors on the wall yesterday.

We have attached garage. And like it, a lot. I grew up with detached garage with my folks, Marie grew up with no garage. When we got married and were looking for our house 54 years sgo, I don't recall the importance we placed on attached or not. Now, 54 years later, same house, I'm glad we wound up with attached. It's also basically our in/out door from/to the house.

I've always had an attached garage except when I was very young.
Not too places I have lived have detached ones.
Right now we have 2- 2 car attached garages. One holds my car, fridge, freezer and lot of other stuff.
The other is DH's shop. He parks in the driveway.

We have a barn/garage. It holds DH's truck, his fishing boat, many many tools and "stuff" . AND my car in bad weather.

Attached garage here. Nice for several reasons, chief among them is that the cat's litter boxes are out there. They have 24/7 access through a small pet door from inside the house to the garage:cat::cat:

Only appt. following marriage had a detached garage used for storage.

1st house had a detached in which the owner was building a small airplane. We used it strictly for storage.

2nd and current house since 1987 was designed by DW with attached.

Our current home and the one before it are both condos. We have secure parking spots in an underground parkade. All of our previous houses had attached garages. I haven’t lived in a home without indoor parking since I left the farm I grew up on 38 years ago.

I voted other because technically my house had an attached garage when it was built. When we bought the house 40+ years ago, the owner had transformed the garage into a storage room and bar area. We just redid the whole basement area of the house and debated reverting back to a garage. Instead, I now have a full bathroom where the bar area was and redesigned the storage area to open shelving and open space. I also put a small refrigerator down there. I don't think I will ever want a garage attached after the transformation.

House #1 was an attached one car CARPORT

House #2 was a detached one car GARAGE

House #3 is an attached 2.5 (has held 3 cars) GARAGE

We park our everyday cars outside but I love having an attached garage, it's an extension of house for us. It is finished with HVAC venting.

We do not currently have any type of garage or any outdoor storage. Adding one (which will happen and this is our forever home and we get real winters here and DH is just going to have to deal with it) will be an undertaking. I think I would prefer attached but not care much either way so long as I get one.

We've had both and there are pros and cons to each. We currently have detached with a covered breezeway that protects us from going between the garage and the house. We do not park in our garage so I guess that makes us less picky on this issue.

We have an attached 3 car garage which leads right to the kitchen which is great for unloading groceries and in times of inclement weather. We have 2 driveways on either side of the house and there was a 4th garage there but previous owners turned into a theater room.

Attached 3-car garage, have used it for my car once in the almost 6 years of living here. My husband does wood working and most of the garage is taken up by tools.

Love the convenience of having an extra fridge (came with the house) and a freezer in the garage.
