We're never been to V&A before and are going for the first itme in June. I read that the men have to wear jackets, but is a tie required? If not, do most men wear a tie anyway?

A tie is not required. My hubby always puts one of those dressy/silk t's under his suit jacket. They look great and much more comfy than a shirt/tie.

You will see a mix of both ties/no ties, so tell you hubby to do what he thinks will be the most comfortable for him.

That's about the size of it.
Offhand I'd say it was an 80-20 mix of tie vs no tie all the many times we've dined there. Used to be I always wore a suit--now, I'm into tan slacks , a blue lightweight sportcoat, and a Disney tie.

DH always wears a suit and tie. It is not required, and you will be OK with a dress shirt and jacket. I just think DH looks so handsome  in his suit and tie, and since he doesn't wear that kind of clothes to work, it is a treat for me! Plus, I figure if we are spending 250+ for dinner, wine pairings, and the entire experience, we ought to be dressed to the hilt! I like to dress up, and for us to do so is a rare event (except for a wedding here and there).
