Did you keep all your VHS tapes? I have a little over 100 (a lot are Disney). I am decluttering today, just curious if others have kept or gotten rid of them.

Also, any tips on organizing old pictures (pre digital), do you just scan them and throw away all the copies? I hate to do that, since I have already paid for them. How are your pics organized?

I transferred all of mine to DVD and then either donated them (the ones with movies) or tossed them (the million and one home videos my dad took when i was younger). It freed up a lot of space and I'm happy with how they turned out.

Photographs have been scanned for backup and then put back in photo albums. I don't have any super organizing tips for those, sorry.

We got rid of all our VHS tapes, as well as our ahem, BETA tapes:eek:. We donated some, sold others at garage sales and threw the rest away. They take up a LOT of room, don't they?

As for old pictures, I can't throw them away. I have scanned some, but the rest I just store in boxes made for that. (archival) On QVC they have boxes that hold 12 smaller boxes inside just the right size for photos. You can label the smaller boxes and keep the photos organized that way. Works for me.

I'll take the VHS...lol...we have a VCR and DS watches all my old Disney movies...

You won't be able to get Disney movies transferred to DVD unless you do it yourself or find someone willing to ignore copyright laws. Believe or not, a lot of people still buy VHS movies - I volunteer at a charity store (similar to Goodwill) and we sell quite a few.

Exactly. I even bought my daughter a VHS VCR at Goodwill ( for $6) to take off to college. The selection of new VHS VCR's is limited, and almost all are combo units with DVD burners that cost way more than I cared to spend.

I have a very few VHS cassettes left that I couldn't replace on DVD. The rest I got rid of. They take up a lot of space! My daughter took a lot of the Disney and Veggie Tales ones for my grandson. They work out well for the little wildman, since he has a tendency to get into things and they are hardier than discs.

I have scanned some old pictures, but I still have a lot that haven't been scanned in. I never throw the hard copies away, though. Can't possibly bring myself to do that. I also have my pictures on multiple discs, flash drives, and external hard drives. I have a friend who had a computer crash and lost every single one of her son's baby pictures. :sad2: I was so heartbroken for her. It made me paranoid about losing my pictures.

I had tons of VHS and donated all of them to our local Domestic Abuse Shelter, along with the TV/VCR combo the kids used when they watched Disney. You'd be surprised how many kids end up in places like that with nothing but the clothes on their backs. I don't need to be there to know how much they are appreciated.

I love love love photo albums and would never part with them. Mine are organized by year. I scanned copies of old family photos and favorites so I can display them throughout the house.

I recently got rid on the majority of them. Unfortunatley, I still have more than I would like but didnt want to part with.

I work at daycare so I donated a lot of mine to there. We still have VCR's and the kids love the older Disney movies. We just watched The Rescuers today. You could hear a pin drop because everyone was so engrossed.

We also have a basement so the rest are downstairs with the kids TV and toys.

I use my old VHS cassettes to prop up decorator lamps on top of our bookcases.

We do keep high quality old photos. Lesser quality old photos get scanned and tossed - the remastered prints we make from the scans, not to mention the online images from them, are better than the originals for the purpose old photos are supposed to serve.

Cluttering our home with things that we bought just because we paid money for them isn't our way. We paid for them to have them when we paid for them - if at some later point in time it is no longer worthwhile keeping them, then the fact that we paid for them at some time in the past is irrelevant. In business this is called "sunk cost" - rational agents don't factor sunk costs into the analysis of what's best.
