Hello!

We currently have a reservation booked for two verandah rooms (1 with myself and husband, and the other with my aunt and my son, 5 y/o). We would save close to $4000 per room to book a VGT room and are thinking of doing so. I do plan on getting trip insurance (although have not purchased yet). If we did cancel our existing reservation and book the VGT rooms - worse case scenario say something happens and my aunt can no longer go but we (myself, husband, son) are still going, I know we would not be refunded and would need to have that expense covered under trip insurance BUT would it be an issue to add my son to our room? I'm *assuming* this would be okay and we would just need to pay the additional cost of a third person in the room...but I don't have any experience with VGT rates. Thanks for any insight!

The biggest issue right off the bat would be if the lifeboat in the section for your room is full. If that is the case, you would not be able to add your son in. (I'm not positive you could anyway since I don't think you can make changes to *GT cabins - but I'm too picky about my cabin location (due to being picky - not due to motion sickness as I would not cruise if I got motion sick) so I don't do GTY or *GT so I'm not positive.)

A couple of things to be aware of in either case though...

First, there is no guarantee that the rooms will be close together - much less in the same lifeboat station. Assuming your aunt does go and the cabins are in different areas, are you going to be cool with your son being on a different lifeboat in the event of an emergency?

Second, be aware that your aunt will have to fill out paperwork to give you and your husband permission to take your son off the ship if she is not going with you. (That would be the case regardless of if you do VGT or book room numbers.)

Book you and your aunt in one room, and your husband and your son in another room. Then if something does happen at least you have an adult in each room and have no potential lifeboat issue as worst case scenario you still have the two rooms.

You cannot modify passengers on a *GT rate, or add another one.
Folks have reported adding a guest (if space available). However that isn’t really the situation. If OP books *GT they should book as PP suggests and put the child in a room with a parent not the aunt. If someone (the aunt) cancels there is still an adult booked to each room. There would be no refund (even through insurance) other than the small amount for port fees/taxes because the single-supplement would apply to the 1 passenger in the room.
