Vets are very $$$$

Just a thought for folks who have to consider costs - Most areas have low cost spay/neuter programs that also administer shots at the time of the surgery. In our case we have to drive over to a town about 25 miles away, but to have a cat/dog spayed/neutered is less than $50 including shots (maybe a tad more for very large dogs).

We are in a very rural area and are sort of the local humane society. We currently have 4 dogs and 11 cats. While I do use our vet for sickness, injury, etc., I have to use the other for spaying/neutering due to the costs (and the number of animals we take).

BTW, I agree that vet costs are reasonable compared to people costs, and we are fortunate to have two great vets.

you dont even want to know what I pay the vet for my 2 horses shots and other annual vet bills...

last years bill for
Barn call $75 -just to get them to come to the barn
check up- (checking heartbeat, blood pressure, eyes and quick body look over
teeth floating- filing their sharp points of their teeth down
coggins- blood test
shots -rabies, East and West Ensephalitis? West Nile, and 2 others

plus 2 shots for my 2 goats

came to almost $900!!

and that doesnt include the emergency visits!

Bur I do get a 10% discount for my cats since I got them from the shelter

Hey Mom is still alive I was wondering about her! Thats great I think or is she still struggling. I have a one eyed cat we could pair up.

She's still alive! She has a lot of stamina, I can say that much!

We have spent over $6 thousand on our westie between surgery and vet visits. Unfortunately she has bone cancer discovered during the surgery on her back. So far she is still with us and at this point pain free. The vets have told us what to look for and that we will know when the time comes. All the vets who treated my dog were excellent and very caring. Luckily we had saved the money for a WDW trip and the family voted to use it for Snowy and forgo our trip for this year. If we ever get another puppy, I will definately get pet insurance. You never know when your pet will need major treatment. Snowy is only 8 and I certainly had not seen this coming.

Most of the adoption agencies here (the humane society, planned pethood) only adopt out animals that they have already spayed or neutered. My dog was adopted at 8 weeks and he was already neutered. Same with my newest cat, although she was already 9 months old. As I remember my older cat also came neutered at about 3 months old. (She is now almost 19!!!)
I am thinking about getting the insurance on the dog. He seems to walk a little funny and I am worried about his hips, yet I know I cannot possibly afford that hip surgery they do on dogs. My golden died at age 5 from cancer and I certainly don't want to go through that again either.
