Vessel sinks and waterfall faucets

We're remodeling a bathroom in the house we just bought, and I was thinking of getting a vessel sink and waterfall faucet. I've seen them at restaurants, and they look really cool. This will be a half bath that won't be frequently used except when we have guests, so I thought I'd like to make it kind of special. Is there anything I need to know about this type of sink? I've been looking on ebay, and there are some good deals on there from sellers with excellent feedback. I just wanted to hear from people who had them in their homes before I bought. Thanks!

Since it is a rarely used 1/2 bath, go for it. My BIL/SIL put these in their master bath and their kids' bath and while they look nice they HATE them. They are difficult to clean (around the outside and where it sits on the counter) and you have to lift your hands up higher to wash them and water runs down your arms. They put them in with higher cabinets and it was one of those-it looks good but not very practical in reality moves.

Well, that's troubling to hear. I've never had a problem with washing my hands in one before, though. I guess it's because they used a higher cabinet. I'll have to be careful of that if we decide to go with one.

We have them in our master bath. While they look way cool, and get tons of compliments, as the OP said, they ARE more difficult to use. Like they said, you have to raise your hands up & at an angle when washing your face, so the water runs off & makes a huge mess. And then the floating faucet is right there that I hit my head on when I'm trying to bend over the vessel bowl. Our floating faucet comes out of the mirror - I wouldn't recommend that either - you have to get behind the mirror for repairs.

I'm short - and I should have taken that into consideration when doing the cabinets & counter top - you add height with a vessel bowl - so we should have lowered the cabiners.

Just for a guest 1/2 bath I would do it, people shouldn't be routinely washing their face in there!

I'll see if I have a pic somewhere....

Why don't you consider contacting a local arts organization or gallery to get your sink? Many potters make vessel sinks. When you get one from an artist, you have a one-of-a-kind piece of art that is also functional and you've helped a creative type in your own area make a living.

No, I'm not an artist, but my son is!

These are our sinks/faucets. We had them put in about 2 years ago and I love them! We also have them on higher cabinets (the ones that used to be there might as well be made for midgets) but haven't had the problem of it being difficult to use. I also haven't had issues with cleaning them, but it might be because they are higher vessels so it's pretty easy to get underneath them.

ETA- TaraPA- your bathroom is lovely!

I chose not to go with them because I'm afraid they'd date the house we are building. I find some of them very appealing to eye and I like them--I was just afraid they were "trendy" looking. I never thought about cleaning them or using them being a hassle.
If you are someone who doesn't mind updating and remodeling, I'd say go for it and even look into what tarheel said. That sounds like a way to get something very unique. Good luck.

Thanks for the pictures. Those are beautiful bathrooms! I was thinking of doing earth tones like both of you did.

Oh, I just noticed that our cabinets look black in that picture, but they are actually dark brown.

We have them in our Master Bath and they are a pain to keep clean!!! I do love the look of them though!!!

I love everyone's bathrooms. The sinks and faucets are beautiful.

I love the water pump faucets. DH not so much....doesn't think controling the water temp and flow would be very easy. Do you find either of these a problem?

Oh I love the water pump faucets! We recently redid our bath and hubby said no on the water pump faucets because he was afraid they would get dirty on the open part. Then we would drink it. lol I still love them tho. We ended up with a taller gooseneck type.

I love the way they look and I wanted to put them in my MB until we stayed in a hotel that had them. Even though the base cabinets were a lot higher than the industry norm my dh still had problems keeping the water in the sink, so I nixed that idea quickly.

Now everytime I think I want something for the house my dh asks me to book a hotel that has some of those features so I can "test drive" (sort of speak) them prior to buying them.

I have to quit watching HGTV, it's an evil channel.;)

It's super easy. It pretty much works just like the turn knob ones (except easier). To one side it keeps cold, the other side it gets hot.

I have the matching tub faucet and that one has two separate handles but it's no easier or harder.

On a side note, our cats LOVE the pump looking faucets. They think they are teh bext drinking fountain ever
