Very Unnerving... Just hit a deer.

Hitting a deer is a very traumatical ordeal. I hit one on 611 in 2002. I still remember the time, 5:23 pm, on my way home from work. It was dusk - no sun but not yet dark. There were 2 of them, one cleared my truck the other did not. I have never screamed so loud in my life. I immediately call 911 and parked my truck to block the traffic behind me so no one else hit her. The poor thing was trying to get up but I assume I broke it's legs. The police put it out of its misery as I sat in my car crying and begging God to forgive me! What was even sadder was the deer stayed on the side of the road for a few days until someone picked it up. Of course, I was hyterical everytime I drove by. My damage, while it didn't look too bad, was extensive. I had a new Blazer at the time and it was over $6,000 to repair.

Once you hit one you are always on the lookout for others. Thank God your family was unhurt.

I travel the beautiful Taconic State Parkway every day, and every week there is another 2 or 3 dead deer on the side of the road (some very gruesome (sp?), you should see what a Hummer doing 80mph does to a deer). Luckily I've only hit 2 (actually one, one ran into the side of my van) but I know at least 3 people I work with who have hit more than 12. As far as reporting it, not many people do. There was an article in our local paper about how the deer situation has improved as there were only 7 deer killed on the parkway last year. I called them up and said I'd meet them on the parkway and point out 7 dead deer right now, they didn't want any part of it.

Sorry about the deer ~ Glad your family are unhurt.

I'm glad everyone was okay.

I can't believe I've been this lucky for so long, but I just hit my first deer a little over a month ago in my brand spanking new one week old car. :headache:

We were SO lucky. I was only going around 45 and slowed down when I saw the deer, then it ran into me. Between slowing down enough and swerving, I was able to hit it at just the right angle that we were both okay. *whew* Not a scratch on my baby and the deer ran off.

You wouldn't have wanted to be a fly on the wall when I hit that baby, though! The language flying out of my mouth... :rolleyes1

Marseeya, That sounds like what happened to me. At 9 pm the night before I left for disney in August, I hit a young deer. (Thank goodness it wasn't injured.) I was only going about 40 or 45 mph. I come over the top of a small hill and there it was right in the middle of my lane looking right at me. Oh it was beautiful! I slammed on the breaks and was able to slow way downand swerve, but I couldn't avoid it. I can remember hearing my father"s voice in the back of my head.........."don't get yourself killed trying to avoid an animal"
I saw the deer tumble in my rear view mirror. I pulled over and looked for the deer, but it was gone. I called the police said I was ok, but rattled . They arrived about 2 minute later. As I told them what happened I started crying. The thought occured to me that maybe it ran into the woods to die. Well, It did run off, but we could see it on the dead end road where I had pulled over. The deer was FINE! not limping , just walking down the street. Police reassured me he was fine and was probably a little stunned.
I had to leave my house at 4am the next day for WDW so needless to say I got very little sleep that night

Glad to hear that you and your family are OK. I am sure that was very scary. Years ago I had a deer run out in front of me. Never hit one and never want to.

I did have to giggle about what you told your kids. Reminded me of the Friends episode where Phoebe found out the real ending to Bambi.

Deer have to get more adventurous to find food now that the leaves are off the trees. We always go to this Christmas light thing at the lake here, and they have no lights leading up to the area, and it is like deer dodgeball driving to it!

Glad you are all ok. DW Sue bumped a 6-point buck last week. He came out of nowhere. Sue thought that she was going to stop in time, but ended up tapping the animal on his shoulder. The buck staggered and, if he had run back into the woods, would have been OK, but instead turned the other way and ran in front of a small car that hit and killed him.

Fortunately, no people were injured. Our van suffered a "small" dent on the hood that is only going to cost $510 to repair.

The deer population in our area has been a problem for quite some time. Last year the city to the north of us decided to thin the herd and hired some sharpshooters to take care of that task. This outraged several people who didn't think that the deer should be killed. I guess that they would rather them starve in the winter. Much more humane. The sharpshooters took out 800 deer and they are still running around everywhere. Someone should teach them to not play in traffic.

Glad you and your family are ok, Papa. It could have been much worse.... thank goodness you are all ok.

Dude what did you do with the meat? That's alot of good eating to just let waste on the side of the road.

Thank goodness you are okay. I was watching a news article the other night that said that a driver hits a deer 1.5 million times a year killing hundreds of thousands of deer and over 100 people. Very often these accidents are in urban areas. Very scary statistics. They were saying that drivers need to stay alert and that includes not talking on a cell phone while driving.
