TAMPA - Nick Liakos is normally cooking during the morning hours at his restaurant, Nicko's Fine Foods.
But at this established Tampa eatery, which still honors a booth where Elvis Presley once dined, it's not a day for Liakos to think about himself or profits. It's a day to think of others.
Nicko's, 4603 Nebraska Ave., provided Cuban sandwiches today for officers searching for Dontae Morris, a suspect in the shooting deaths of Tampa police officers Jeffrey Kocab and Dave Curtis.
The restaurant made 40 sandwiches - cut into threes - and delivered them about 10 this morning.
Liakos said the effort was not about publicity. It's his way of saying thank you and remembering the officers who died and those trying to find the suspect.
"They've been there all night working, and they're tired, and we brought some coffee over this morning for them, and we're gonna bring a little lunch for them, too," Liakos said.
The shooting deaths have brought an outpouring of grief and support throughout the commumnity, including a $95,000 reward for assistance in finding Morris - the largest amount ever established, police Chief Jane Castor said in a news conference today.
While thousands of tributes were left on guest books set up for the slain officers, other organizations are providing assistance for Curtis' and Kocab's families.
Among the efforts:
• The Tampa Police Department has established a fund to help the officers' families.
Donations can be made at any branch of the Tampa Bay Federal Credit Union or checks can be mailed to the Fallen Officers' Memorial Fund, c/o Tampa Police Department, 411 N. Franklin St., Tampa FL 33602.
• Niko's Restaurant, 3705 Tampa Road in Oldsmar, has organized a "Wind Beneath Their Wings" fundraiser, scheduled for 5 to 9 p.m. July 11.
• Tonight's previously scheduled LifePath Hospice community grief support group, scheduled for 6 to 7:30, will deal solely with the officers' deaths. The group is free and open to the public.
The support group meets at the LifePath Hospice Temple Terrace Resource Center, 11150 N. 53rd St., Temple Terrace. For information, call (813) 871-8417.
• Anyone with information on the shooting or Morris' whereabouts is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-873-TIPS (8477), go online to make an anonymous report at
