Well... I finally saw a REALLY p.o.'d CM! We were returning on the ferry to the TTC. There was a posse of cheerleaders on board. I watched from afar as one of the aforementioned cheerleaders decided to do a backflip on the ferry. Then another one did the same. The chaparone just grimaced, looked away and said "I can't watch this!" Once we docked... the cheerleaders beetled off the ferry. While we were waiting to exit the captain came out and boy, was he irate. He had thought that he had hit something with the "thud" of the backflip. He was so mad once he found out that it was a backflip that made the noise he went back into his captain's quarters and slammed the door! Yikes! I don't blame him. I thought it was very weird. These same girls were "horking" off the deck prior to this and my 12 yo DS told them to knock it off cause "fish have dignity too!" People!

The chaparone should have said something instead of looking away. What would have happened if she had backflipped and tore something.

I'm surprised when a group of people (expecially kids/teenagers in a group and there is an adult), that no one confronts the adult and tells them to control their group. I just don't understand why people are afraid of confronting people...expecially suburban kids and adults.

They are affraid that they will ruin the kids Disney fun. They figure that why bother because someone else will see it and say something. They don't want to be seen as the "bad/mean" CM.

To me it sounds like this was a safety issue, and the CM definitely should have spoken up. Safety first is my motto!

:hippie:

I am surprised nobody said anything - I know in most situations I've been in similar, someone (including me) either says something offhanded or gives glares. Usually it works.

This line would have worked "for insurance purposes, we cannot allow that kind of behavior on this vessel". pirate:

No security backup, that's why. Ruining the kids' fun is not the reason.

Don't worry about that.
The cheerleader's super-power is "indestructibility."

(I saw it on a TV promo.)

;)

Fun, schmun. They're afraid the parents will get medieval on them. Or the kids will, or both.

They should been given a lecture on how to act. We were at our pool and some of the cheerleaders were in the pool doing stunts. There are other people around you. Ughh...they just drove me insane doing that.

I would have had to say something to the chaperone, along the lines of, "What did they bring you for, to look the other way when they misbehave. Well I guess you are doing a great job."

Not to change the subject or anything, but what is "horking?" Or, is it one of those things that I'm better off not knowing?;)

Tumbling is in their nature but there are places that are appropriate for it and places that are not. And a boat is definitely not. I can only imagine what the captain thought because if it was a standing back they definitely can come down with a loud thud. The parent should have said something. We had a competition today and dd was in a blow-up juming thing with another girl on her team and they both did back handsprings. Myself and the other mother quickly put a stop to it because that was not the appropriate place. Unfortunately, there were other kids in there doing flips and no one stopped them.

As for stunting in pools our kids are told they are not to be doing that. It is definitely a hazard to both the other people in the pool and to the cheerleaders. I always have the fear of a kid falling and hitting their head on the side of the pool. I've told many cheerleaders to stop but unfortunately I'm not their parent so they don't always listen. I try though.

But as with many things parents just don't care what their kids do.

Ever seen "Titanic"?

Remember when Jack was trying to teach Rose to spit over the side?

There ya go.

Hey, you asked.

Thanks! I learn so many interesting things from this board. Not necessarily things that I need to know, but still.....

I am with tchrrx, and unsure of what "horking" is? I think I know, but would not expect it from a cheerleader. Also, I don't think the OP said it was a parent, they said chaperone. I would be livid to know that my child's chaperone would allow that to occur. I am not saying that the chaperone could have stopped it, but at least they could have done something more than turn away.

Okay, I admit we let our girls stunt in pools. However, it is only when they are the only ones in the pool, and we have parents standing on both sides of the pool to make sure they don't get too close to the sides. Usually it is when we are at an out of town competition and we basically have the indoor pool to ourselves.

Yes, the tiny skinny one is mine:)

Having said that...I would NEVER EVER approve of a back handspring on a pool deck! It can be dangerous on any hard service, but a moving vessel? Ridiculous. That chaperone should be ashamed. Cheerleaders will tumble all over and stunt everywhere if they are allowed, it is up to parents and chaperones to put a stop to it.

I'm sure that chaperone would have stood up and said something when one of the girls got hurt and it was time to sue somebody.
