Vero Beach Question

DW and myself dropped in on VB back in October as we were driving down to Ft. Lauderdale to go on a cruise. We had lunch there and walked around the resort some and were amazed at how beautifull this resort is. Our first thought was we sure wish the VB resort was up at Hilton Head. One thing that we did notice though - there is absolutely nothing around the resort, such as restaurants, etc. When we left the resort we headed south and drove miles and miles and all we saw were alot of other resorts and beach cottages. It was a long ways down to the town of Vero Beach itself and even when we got there, there didn't seem to be many restaurants. My question though is what is north of the VB resort. We didn't drive in that direction. I would hate to think that if we stayed at VB, our only dining options would be to eat at the resort restaurant (which was nice) or cook in our unit. We might would seriously think about staying at VB for a visit, just because of how pretty it was and it's closeness to the ocean; but I think we would miss the hustle and bustle you find at Hilton Head.

There are actually several good restaurants in Vero; our favorite being the Ocean Grill.

We do find the resort to be more of an all inclusive style resort, vs HHI where you must venture out.
There really is everything right at the resort, including two fine restaurants and an awesome lounge.

We have drven north a few times. There are lots of houses on the beach, vs the condo style homes to the south.
These homes seem to be either worth millions, or ready for the junk heap. Very interesting indeed. There is a lot of renovation going on with many of the homes, so perhaps they will all be worth millions!

We really enjoy our trips to the Mclarty Museum. Although it's small, we find the story of the Plate Fleet fascinating.

Vero Beach is a completely different style of vacation compared to what you get at Hilton Head. There is not a lot of restaurants or shops convenient to the resort, either to the north or the south. Vero Beach does have a mall and the typical mall type restaurants (Longhorn, Chili's, Red Lobster, etc.) Out at 95, there is an outlet mall, but I prefer the outlets in Blufton, SC to these.

All of that being said, there are some very good little local restaurants along the Treasure Coast. Fort Pierce has some great fishing and seafood restaurants.

Vero is more about the beach than Hilton Head, and since it is right on the beach, this is a better resort if that is what you are looking for in your vacation. We really enjoyed our 5 night stay there in April (it was still a little too cold for ocean swimming, but that didn't stop us). We were back for July 4th, and even though the resort was booked to capacity, it never felt too busy. We really enjoyed the on-site restaurants, and spent most of our time at the resort. I certainly think this resort is worth a try. You may not like it as much as Hilton Head, but depending on how important that direct beach access is to you, you may prefer Vero to Hilton Head in the end.

I loved Vero Beach and there were many good places to eat in the area. We also ate at Sonya's one night and it was very good. This June we are heading to HHI because we wanted to try something new, but I sure will go back to Vero next Nov.

It isn't often we hear HH dining as decribed as ' hustle and bustle' !
VB actually offers 4 eateries. The poolside place, The green cabin room, shutters and sonya's. There are also many places within "a few miles" of the resort that have very many positive reviews. We never look at eating en suite as a negative ( assuming at least a 1 bedroom ) as it can be so relaxing!

Behind the front desk at VB the CM's have a "restaurant recommendations" book/binder that they will share with anyone who asks. That is how we learned of a great Italian and Seafood place we would have never found without them.

Actually witha 10 - 15 minute drive there are probably more restaurants than you could visit is many many visits.

On our October visit, we went north to Sebastian ( I think) and ate at Capt. Hirams - it's probably a 10 minute drive from the resort. Two nights we went south to VB and ate at the Lobster Shanty one night (blah) and Ocean Grille one night (very good). There were loads of places near the mall to eat, but we try and not do chain restaurants on vacations. We also ate at the resort one night and it was good too. I guess we didn't do much but the beach, swim and relax - so we didn't care to drive 15 minutes for supper.
