Vero Beach on REALLY short notice?

We have 12 nights planned in August for DVC at WDW. We plan to check out on 9/01, but don't have to be back to work until 9/05. We are thinking of maybe going over to Vero Beach for the night of 9/01 to check it out. Any ideas about what our chances of actually getting an ocean view studio or 1 bedroom for the night if we decide last minute to go there? What about any room at all? I realize it is Labor Day Weekend, but maybe since it is Friday we might have a chance? What is the shortest notice anyone has given for a DVC room? Can we get something same day?

I'd have the phone numbers of some other hotels handy just in case. Vero seems to do a great job of keeping the resort full on weekends. They tend to host wedding groups and business group events. You might get lucky with a cancellation but I'd have a back-up plan in place.
