This time next week, we’ll be in Vero Beach. YAY!

I tried a search, but couldn’t find a good thread on no-see-ums, so here’s one more.

I called the resort and the CM said that this time of year they are not that bad, but still can be a problem in the early morning, and early evening.
I asked if they sell repellent at the resort, CM said yes.

My question is has anyone had luck with what’s sold at the resort (I forgot to ask what they sell) or with other products? I've heard Avon Skin So Soft works but not sure I can get this in the next couple of days.

We have a Bass Pro Shop near us, and I’ll probably stop there before we leave. I think they carry Deep Woods Off. Anyone have any luck with this product?

Thanks in advance for any answers you can provide.

Peace, G4L

Deep Woods Off is a good product. It'll do you fine. If you avoid sunset and sunrise that'll help as well. We had no problems with no-see-ums when we were at Vero. I'd take the Off just in case.

Skin so soft is a wives' tale; it doesn't work (see Mythbusters)! Deep Woods Off works like a champ, but you smell like a Boy Scout. Garlic pills are supposed to work well, but they can make you stink too (so I've been told). If you get there and they are "bugging" you, try the Off, otherwise you may find you don't need anything at all.

see. They aren't mosquitoes and although they leave you itchy they won;t leave the same mark as a mosquitoe. I find that if there is a breeze out you won't have any problem with them. If they are around Vero has got them but I find that anything with Deet takes care of them as well as most other pests.
Walmart sells Repel inexpensively and I believe its now available non aerosol if your flying and this is an issue. THe green Sportsman style is heavier in Deet than the others. Have a great trip Vero Rocks!:)

Off should work and I think it comes in an orange scent? I agree with a pp that said avoid sunrise and sunset. Those little buggers seem to be out in stronger force during those times.

Thanks everyone! Off or Repel will be in the luggage, hopefully we won't have to use it.
I'll report back when we return.

Peace,
G4L

Oh my gosh, those nasty no-seeums! We were at Vero in July and they were HORRIBLE. My sister and I were seriously welted all over:scared1: . My DH, DD and brother-in-law, 4 nephews and 1 niece did not get bit at all!! I truly believe that it depends on your blood, or skin, or if you are allergic to them or not. We were also told by almost all of the CM's that July is the very worst time for them, so I believe you will be ok in March. We were also told that Deep Woods Off (which we did have) or Skin so Soft would work, but for my sister and I, the Deep Woods Off did nothing! I know we were allergic!! Good luck to you. Definately wear some sort of protection!

From what i now understand, nothing repels no see ums. They bite and, unlike mosquitos, cannot bite through clothing. A couple of years ago, we were camping and it was about dusk around the campfire. I was doused with Deep Woods Off (because I always get bad reactions from mosquito bites) but later i found that i was bitten a million times from the knees down, despite not seeing a single bug, and my kids & DH were untouched. I didn't know what no see ums were until after I got home and described my bites. They were soooo itchy...the itching doesn't go away like mosquito bites, and they tend to scab and scar for a very long time. From what i researched on the internet, the only "repellent" is socks and slacks. :confused3

Avon Skin So soft doesn't work with No See Um's. We have traveled to Sanibel many times, and boy those no see um's sure like me. We discovered cactus juice - and it works for us. It's also smells good. Here's a link:

Just make sure whatever you use, to put it on before you even go outside. If you wait until you get a bite, you will surely have a bunch before you know it. If you are wearing shorts, make sure you get your legs under your shorts. Lather the stuff on everywhere.

Now if you get bites, the best thing I have found is to use Lanicane.

Wow, Laura, we must be related, lol. We were there in July, also. The other three members of my party did not get bitten, but I got eaten alive. Sheesh! What is it about me that those blood suckers like so much! :headache:

I must be a member of your family as well! We were there in July as well and my girls got tired of trying to count my welts once they hit 200! That was double what I had in 05. Hope I don't double again this July!:rotfl:

Does anyone recall what the lifeguards use? It is a high concentration of DEET like 90+%? It is available on Amazon.com and I would like to order so I don't need to use the Prednisone this year.
