I am interested in making a reservation at Vero Beach in the future but I am not familiar with the resort or where it is located from airport.

I would prefer to fly to Florida and hope I would not need a car.

What are your thoughts? Are there lots of activities on the grounds for ten year old boys?

Please just provide general information about Vero Beach and logistics. Thanks.

Also, I like to grocery shop for at least breakfast and snack items. Is there a convenient grocery story nearby?

Donna

Vero Beach is a lovely resort. I really enjoyed my two visits there!

It's about a 2 hour drive form the MCO airport. I'm sure you could hire a towncar service to get you there and back, but personally, I would not want to be without a car at VB. IMHO, the restaurant options are limited at the resort and the bigger groceries are not nearby/within walking distance. I think a rental car would be about the same as the price for the towncar service, but am not sure. We had a car both times.

There are lots of things for a 10 year old to do at the resort. My 11 year old nephew had a great time! The main attractions are the pool/slide and the ocean. There are daily organized activities for kids (although some of them are aimed at younger than 10), minigolf and bicycle rentals. Tennis and basketball are also options.

I'll let some others take it from here - there are quite a few posters who have stayed there many, many times already!

To add what CarolMn posted above, I would also get a rental car. There are a lot of restraunts with in a 10-15 minute drive from the resort. The Indian River Mall is about 15 minutes away that has a movie theater and food court also. There is a Bob Evans right in front of the mall also.
It is about 96 miles from MCO(Orlando) airport to VB resort. Here is a link with info about VB below.;)

As far as flying in, you can either choose Orlando, West Palm Beach (both a bit of a drive) or Melbourne, which is about 40 minutes from the resort. Melbourne is a nice, small airport, but it usually costs more to fly in there. In my opinion, a rental car is a MUST when visiting the resort.

I have a question also.is VB a good Honeymoon spot? i am sending my Sister and her soon to be hubby on their Honeymoon to VB.also, the oceanview inn eroom is that a good choice for them? MS said that none of the studioes were ocean view,is that correct?
TIA, MISTY

aerobicsdonnaWelcome to the board.:) Here is a link to a number of questions that have been asked before about VB:

Like the others said, you are better off with a rental car. There are a number of things to do outside the resort but few within walking distance. If you are flying Delta then you can get to Melbourne. The fares will be higher than flying into Orlando but it is an hour closer. Delta/Delta Connection is about your only option into and out of Melbourne anymore.

luvindisneyworld That's a great thing to do for DS.:) Imho you are better off sticking with an OV Inn Room over a studio. Some studios do have partial OV but that is a gamble. Make sure to put in a request for upper floor.

1) VB is about an hour and a half to a two hour ride from MCO... Here are the instructions from the DVC website....
From Orlando International Airport (Via I-95 South)
a) Take the Beeline (528) toll road east to I-95 South.
b) Follow I-95 South to 512 East - exit 69(New:156) Sebastian/Fellsmere.
c) Turn left/east on 512 to US 1 (6.5 miles).
d) Turn right/south on US 1 to 510 (4.5 miles).
e) Turn left/east on 510 to A-1-A (2.5 miles).
f) Turn right on A-1-A.
g) The Resort is immediately on the left.

2) I would definately say, rent a car... Generally, you can spend anywhere from $150-$250 for a rental car for a week's stay... A few years ago, my DW researched how much a shuttle service such as Mears would cost, and the rental car was actually much cheaper.

3) VB staff does an excellent job of providing activities for kids. You'll get an itinary once you check in... When are you going down?? Dodgers spring training camp is only a short distance away from the resort..

4) VB is one of the smaller DVC resorts... All of the buildings are on the oceanside of the A1A.. The atmosphere of the resort is generally pretty quiet and laid back.

5) For grocery shopping, I'd either recommend Super Wal-Mart or Publix on US-1... Publix is the closest at a few miles away.

VB is a great resort! :earsboy: My family loves it... IMHO, everyone in DVC should try it at least once...

As I would definitely classify it as a good choice for a Honeymoon... Sonya's is a good place for a nice relaxing dinner, and moonlight walks along the boardwalk and beach are very romantic.. (At least according to my DW.. ;-) )

I am also going to Vero Beach for the first time this April. I have heard that one of the only downsides to the resort are the black flies. Is this a problem in late April, early May? Does anyone have any suggestions on how to minimize the annoyance?

Do the rooms have DVD players, or just VCR's?

Thanks,
Don

An oceanview room should be a very lovely honeymoon setting. Watching the sunrise over the ocean is a memory itself. If the timing is right, they may catch a full moon glowing on the ocean as well. Romantic? ;) ;)

probably talking about the noseeums or sand fleas. Wear a good bug repellant. Some days you will not notice them at all. On other days you can get eaten alive if not prepared. Noseeums are a tiny biting midge. They fly when the air is calm and warm. The bite is small and not painful. The itching that follows is another story. If you can keep from itching, they clearup quickly. Some people swear by Avon Skin So Soft. However in a test they did on repellents, it came out towards the bottom of the list and doessn't last long but is the mildest to use. The one that did the best was Deep Woods OFF but it contains DEET which some people stay away from and is too strong for small children.
