Hi all,
I will be staying 3 nights at VB in June. 1st trip to VB. I'm looking for information regarding shopping, restaurants, things to do, etc. in the area. I'm considering a side trip to Kennedy Space Center.
I would also be interested in tips and opinions regarding the resort. I'm staying in an Inn room.
Thanks for the help! :)

Next Trip:
BWV / VB - June 01
BWV - Christmas 01

Hey Mark,

we just returned from Vero Beach last night. The resort is quite beautiful - we enjoyed our stay. We were in a 1 bedroom so were not in the Inn much. We ate dinner one night at Shutters. The service was slow, the food ordinary. The poolside bar was great for getting lunch. There are not a lot of restaurants close by. The thing that struck us first is that the resort is so remote. By that, I mean, you have to drive a good 10 - 15 minutes to find a McDonald's or any other restaurants. It was about a 15 minute drive to the closest grocery story recommended by the Disney staff. Guess we are too used to "convenience" being just up the street in either direction. It was a perfect place to go to just relax. My husband and I took a tour of the Piper Airplane factory - a highlight for him! There is an outlet mall about 20 - 25 minutes away, and a regular mall with theaters (about the same distance.) The drive to Cocoa Beach and Cape Canaveral is about an hour away. We had two teenage boys with us who just wanted to play tennis and go to the beach. We were there five nights and were beginning to struggle for "eating" options at dinner. Your three day stay should be perfect. Hope this helps - enjoy your stay!

Disney's DVC Resort is just fabulous and laid back. Actual ocean views from your room may be difficult to come by. There is a protective dune that makes seeing the ocean difficult except from the Cottages and most of the Inn rooms. If possible request is for Ocean VIEW or better yet as for a direct ocean view (yes, there is a difference). Note you will not see the ocean from the ground floor because of the dune.

DVC Vero has a nice pool area. At the beach you can rent umbrellas, beach chairs and jet ski They often have some fun things to do like nature watching ( manatees, dolphins and turtles), kayaking on the intercostals waterway( fishing and sight seeing), Mel Fisher's treasure museum looks an interesting half day, they run excursions to Kennedy Space Center, organized "teen nights out" where they take kids bowling or Pizza and a movie. I would suggest too call a few days in advance to check on their VB activities schedule. To find out what is schedule call Eb & Flo's (the activities location there) to make your reservation.

You might want to try to rent a bicycle and ride the "jungle trail" along the nearby river. It is a very old, unpaved road, with swamps, old orange groves, and new condominiums under construction. Beautiful views and very old Florida. Eb and Flos can give you a map and tell you how to find the trail.
One of the best places at VB resort is the Green Cabin Room on the upper level. We had dessert there one evening. They serve themed drinks, specialty coffees and their own micro brewed beer. Dinners in Shutters and the breakfasts are very good. Shutters has some less expensive selections than the other on site restaurant (Sonya's). Shutters serves Pizzas, Pasta entrees, seafood, steak, prime rib, meatloaf and Conch Fritters. Sonya's serves fine steaks and chops.

Around Town
One restaurant that is a favorite is The Patio. It is located in town, is reasonably priced and has fantastic fresh seafood.

The Ocean Grill right on the water in downtown Vero. It's not inexpensive but great food. Kids are certainly welcome but it may not be exactly the place for a family dinner. You might try asking for a window seat.

A recommendation for seafood would be Captain Hirams, Ocean Grill is pretty neat too. Be sure to ask for a seat near the windows to gaze upon the ocean during your meal. Both are short driving distances but Capt Hirams is a little farther (Sebastain), both restaurants are on the map they give you at check-in. Capt Hirams is a more casual restaurant and it seems a place the locals go too. Vero Resort has a big black binder near the DVC area that has all the local restaurants and menus.

The Mall is close by and has movie theaters. Also, you will find less expensive dinner choices around and in the Mall. You can do some window shopping at the Mall or take the tour of the Piper Aircraft factory (Tuesdays and Fridays at 10:00 a.m. and 2 p.m., Reservations Required, Dial (561) 567-4361 & press #5 or x2499).

I will be going on the DCL in June. I am flying in a day early and I'm thinking of spending the day at Vero Beach to check things out. I am a DVC Member and would like to check it out for a future booking. I will not be booking a room there this night. Can I still go for the day to Vero Beach to swim, etc.?

GB, you can stop by and check out Vero. The beach is not really private it is just so far from anything else that it seems private. The pool area is strictly for guests at Vero. You need a room key just to enter the gate at the pool. Unfortunately the pool area is where all of the facilities are. So if you go down just for the day you will not be able to use the pool restrooms and changing areas or the pool's snack bar. I know that they enforce this quite strictly since they have had trouble with day visitors using the facilities before. But you could still go down for the day to walk on the beach and eat a bite of lunch at Shutters.

Eva, thanks for your reply. That is a depressing answer though. If I can't go for a day and use the pool than I'll probably just go to Cocco Beach for the day. There are at least public restrooms (although not nice ones). I was going to stay at the Radison by the port but maybe I'll just get a room at Cocco Beach for the day.

On second thought, I'll probably still go check out Vero Beach as I've been wanting to book a stay there. So, are you saying there is no access to bathrooms, even at the Inn? I would surely think they would have to have facilities for people where they check in. Also, you mean when you are staying on property you have to rent a beach chair? I would think they would just have them for anyone to use.

There are restrooms in the Inn near the restaurants, but they aren't locker rooms like you would find by the pool area if you wanted to shower/change.

There are lounge chairs around the pool that are free of charge but the chairs and umbrellas at the beach cost money. I believe it was $18 for 2 chairs and an umbrella for the day.

We were at Vero 2 weeks ago. We went to a place called the Lobster Shanty at 5:30 on a Monday (we have kids so that is why we went at that time) and there was a 45 min wait!! It is true about retirees and early bird dining!! We went to another place just down the street called Mr. Manatees and it was a shorter wait. I had dolphin, DW had catfish and we got shrimp and clams as appetizers. The kids had fish fingers. It was a nice casual place and the foood was good.

Access to the pool area is very restricted because they had problems with local folk coming to use the pool for the day. You can walk around the resort, dine, go on the DVC tour but using the pool is questionable. If you need a restroom there is one by the restaurant. However, they probably would question you if you changed into a swimsuit as they have an eye out for that type of activity. If you ask, you might be permitted to use the pool but there's no guarantee. Might depend on how busy the resort is that day. Access to the beach is not restricted. There is also a public beach next door that I assume may have changing facilities.

We will be at Vero in less than 2 weeks!
Lots of our favorite restaurants have been mentioned and it is making me hungry already!

We love seafood.

LindaDVC! We're headed down to the beach for our spring break and will be at the resort 4/8-4/13 for our first stay using points. Maybe we'll see you there!

All of us (DH, DD-11/12 & DS-9) are looking forward to loads of fun in the sun! Hoping to go to the Kennedy Space Center for a day. Can anyone tell me about the Nasa Up Close Tour? I'm thinking that our kids won't care to do the Cape Canaveral Then & Now tour. Help from anyone that's been there recently.

Planning on getting the kids involved in activities at the resort and possibly a round or 2 of golf. Also thought that it might be funs to do a boat trip (I think its too early for manatee watching?!?...Do they have dolphin boat rides?) Does anyone have a recommendations for us?

We're also hoping to do something fun for our daughter that turns 12 on the 12th (her golden birthday). Shopping for sure as its one of her favorite activities.

Gotta gooooooooo....13 days and counting!

Dream it and you're there!
