I have a question for those that stay at Vero Beach during hurricane season. Have you ever been evacuated, and if so, where does Disney send you? Do they send you in land to a resort at WDW, or are you on your own? Have you ever had to physically evacuate VB?

I will be at VB in August, and am ready to take my chances.

Should I ask for a room with a view of the storm surge on my room request? Seriously, the only natural disasters I am familiar with involve a seismograph. BTW, there is a question on the Theme Park Boards about Hurricanes and WDW in general... but they don't cover the DVC coastal properties. I can't tell you about point discount, but both HH and VB are booked at that time of year.

That's funny nwdisgal, my wife was just asking me the same thing.
We were at WDW for both Andrew and Floyd. Of course Andrew was well to the south, but we were staying at the Poly when the parks closed for Floyd. After it was determined Floyd would continue north and miss WDW, Disney scrambled to open at least one park. Animal Kingdom opened that day at noon for resort guests only. Many of the workers appeared to be lower to middle management.
Anyway, we are going to VB in Sept, and with our track record...well, who knows!!!

We were also there for Floyd! Staying at the All Stars... :) Significantly upgraded since those days!!! While it was annoying that the parks closed, it is kinda cool to say we "survived" a Disney tropical storm... What a joke it was! :)

As for Vero, don't think I would want to stay during a big H, but they would definitely evacuate given the location I would think. I wouldn't worry about it. I lived in FL for 19 years, and wouldn't worry about it at all.. Hey, if it comes just head to WDW :). Also makes for GREAT surfing weather!!! :) :D

Not to make light of a hurricane, but you should be fine because I won't be in Vero this August. Previous weather track record-

Norway - 95 degrees- hottest temps in 100 years

Bermuda- Cruised back to NY in Hurricane Gloria

Grand Floridian- Wildfires close by - no fireworks.

I can't understand why no one in my family wants to travel with me !!!
Maybe DVC will change my luck.

We were at the VB resort about 3 years ago, arriving the day after a hurricane had hit. There was quite a bit of damage. A lot of the power was still off. The electric gates were not working, the outside fans on the porch of the main building had to be replaced, and the rooms facing the ocean had water damage. They were drying the carpets in those rooms. The CM's said the water went through the balcony doors. They also told us that all the guests at the resort had been evacuated, I believe to WDW. We are going again this September, so we will see. Jerry.

sumesseful,

We were at Vero that night, also.

The resort had been evacuated the day before - we had had reservations for that night. After Floyd passed through so quickly, we called MS the next morning and reserved an Inn room for the next two nights. That first night - a Thursday if I recall - had only 40 guests according to the CMs in the restaurant.

Remember the fire alarms going off at 2:00 AM? Folks - you never have to worry about sleeping through a fire alarm at Vero Beach!! :) Everyone was out in the hallways in their PJs!!

All in all - the staff was VERY accomodating!

lsyorke - I laughed when I saw your storm track travel record. In 1992 I went to Hawaii in September. My friend who lived there all her life said, "Don't worry, we haven't had a hurricane here in almost ten years. " We missed Hurricane Iniki by two days. Last year I was supposed to go to Olympia to the Capital Building. I backed out at the last minute and then our big earthquake hit - with a fair amount of damage to that building and the epicenter close by. Oh, and during the winter of 96 I experienced three significant events in one trip - was snowed in at the Pass, finally took the one road we could find out and encountered rock slides and had to detour, then we made it to the interstate after travelling for several hours (outside of our normal route to get home) we missed the interstate being shut down by minutes due to flooding.

It sounds like Disney handles this whole hurricane thing well, whether inland or on the coast. I'll keep my fingers crossed.
