Vero Beach Closed

One small tidbit to keep in mind.

Unlike the resorts at WDW which has it's own utility company, Vero Beach is at the mercy of the area around it for support services.

A lot of the cleanup may be waiting on the utilities getting back to normal than damage to the resort itself. Nevermind the surrounding area damage.

We're holding our breath for our trip on 10/29 (beach cottage). We were starting to wonder if the Inn/Resort buildings might open before the beach cottages. We're staying at the Boardwalk earlier in the week and the rest of the weekend has been sold out for ages, so we'll have to try a different WDW adventure for a weekend as Plan B (not the worst thing in the world).

At any rate, I can't imagine what it must be like to live in Florida right now, especially with It-Who-Shall-Not-Be-Named barreling through the Carribbean.

Met a different security guard today in front of the resort. There was much more movement. Vehicles going in and out. Same story. We suffered damage but it was not structural. Went down to the beach. That was a chore in itself and got a view of the damage. It appeared a number of windows were blown out and siding gone along with destruction of foilage and severe beach erosion:( Could not get real close, but now understand why it will be closed for awhile. I really hope Disney is able to assist all the people that had vacations scheduled and the CM's who are out of work for the time being.

Called MS tonight as we are scheduled 10/16-10/23 at VB and was told no reservations prior to 10/16 so that must be why we have not gotten the cancellation call. They do not know if they will be open by then even. I asked about any other DVC property for those dates and there is nothing else so we will just wait and see. Some of the points were borrowed is my only concern other than the non-refundable plane tickets. If I knew the area and the risks of damage elsewhere I would make arraignments elsewhere but no idea what to do or elsewhere to go. Minor I know compared to the lives destroyed in FL. :( What a mess. It's like the weather gods are angry with the beautiful sunshine (now disaster) state. Praying Ivan disipates.

Madacco, you didn't happen to take any pictures during your visit that you could post? Particularly of the beach erosion? I assume the stairs to the beach are gone......

All the resorts on the barrier islands are in the same boat. There is tremendous beach erosion, problems with the properties, and the very basic lack of power to begin with. Disney is probably the most likely to open first. I think you'd be better off staying off-site near WDW rather than staying in a non-ocean Vero resort during this time of rebuilding. If Disney's not open, stick with WDW.

Thanks for the update. That's the most information we've gotten so far. Hope you and your family are safe.

You're welcome and thanks. Unfortunately I did not have the camera today but had it yesterday and got some pictures next door of the destruction of the Wabasso Beach area. Just seeing it made me realize that no matter how well built the resort is, it couldn't escape some damage. From A1A the only damage you can see is fallen trees. Will try to get the pictures downloaded tommorrow.

Regarding maintenance fees, In florida we all carry insurance against windstorm. It is very expensive, and has a high deductible, but hopefully it will cover VB's damage so that no special assessments are necessary.

Just called MS, they are not to allow for new reservations prior to 10/17 and will cancel all remaining September reservations. They are encouraging those scheduled between 10/1 and 10/16 to consider rebooking to another DVC resort however there is little to nothing available during this time frame.

Also, I forgot to ask. If you borrowed points for this stay and they cancel your reservation, will they restore them to their original year?

We were booked for 4 days from the 14th onwards... cancelled it today. With Ivan threatning, we decided it wasn't worth the risk, so we bailed. Still going to WDW though.
