Vero Beach Cast Member Issues

Oh, I didn't! He was very chatty with me and he would actually initiate the conversation. Maybe it was because I look young (still get carded from time to time).

Thanks..... maybe I look OLD???? :confused3 :rotfl2:

I think it had to do with my 19 year old daughter who was with me every time. I think he was SHY with her standing with me.

Sorry, didn't mean it that way :) I have no idea what you look like. I just meant that if he thought I was similar in age to him he may have felt more comfortable around me. But if you had your 19yo DD with you, that was probably why!!

Grumpy how?

Maybe grumpy is the wrong word. Perhaps stern would be better. He was very serious, which is probably a good trait for a lifeguard, but it is Disney. You can be serious and still crack a smile. I did see him give a guy a hard time because his kids were wearing the inflatable arm things instead of getting a life vest. The guy informed the lifeguard that the kids wouldn't wear the vest.

I forgive you. ;) Yeah I think it was our dd to be honest.

Have been members at Vero since 1996 and have been going there two times (at least) a year since then.....except for Shutters which we aren't impressed with.....they have some of the very best cast members...we also belong at OKW and HH....more great cast members. No, maybe the lifeguards are very chatty (but still friendly) they are too busy trying to enforce the safety rules and watching out for kids that parents aren't paying attention to because they are at "a Disney resort" and are safe. Trust me I've seen this every trip!

Just returned from VB. The CM at the front desk was earning her ears and was sort of lost on info about the resort. My DD8 did several activities at CH and loved all the CM's. I did notice a little rudeness when I asked what time the shark tooth necklace class would end and she said it's over when it's over and did not give me a time frame. The CM's at the beach were extremely friendly and so was the lady doing the hair braiding for all the young girls! I also heard a CM in the gift shop saying he would be at WDW tomorrow. He was an older gentleman and I wondered if some CM's work at VB and WDW? We can't wait to go back next year !

My thought about "what time the shark tooth necklace class would end" is this. The projects are very open ended. My DGC take their time and many many times one or the other was the very last completing the project. We were not rushed, and sometimes there were 15 minutes between the time the last other person left and we were still there.

We went to VB in July and we have never experienced any rudeness. I think the CM's at VB are WONDERFUL!!:thumbsup2:thumbsup2

I am glad to hear so many positive responses! Maybe there was something more going on that had people not as chipper as they usually are. We have encoutered the best of the best and the worst of the worst at the same resort at different times (not VB).

We had a great experience with cm's at Vero. Once we were in the gift shop and DS was pin trading. The cast member noticed that DS was one pin short of completing a set. He went in the back and searched all over to see if there were any. He couldn't find one but he said he had an extra in his personal collection. He took our address end we recieved it a week later. We offered to give him a pin in exchange or to buy him a new one of his choice. He refused.

I've started to post a reply a few times and chose to hold my tongue (I am learning). Glad to see so many people are still happy with the CMs. The CMs at VB and HHI are older on average. Many of them are basically career people who live in the area. Many at VB have been there since we started going the in 1999. I think the older CMs are probably more strict and more attentive to safety.

One thing I have found interesting is that many of the lifeguards (if not all) are also the activity CMs (at least at VB I know). Once you see them interacting with the kids away from the pool you have to appreciate their commitment and ability to play the appropriate role. When the CMs are playing lifeguard they are ALL business. They have been there for years, know their pool and know what accidents have happened in the past, and why they happened.

I love to sit at the pool and observe them doing they're job. The guards on the stands do this methodical grid scanning of the pool for 30 minutes while they are on the stand. Even when someone comes up and talks to them they do not stop scanning. They talk, but they do not get distracted and do not stop scanning. Anything more than a quick question and they get on the walkie talkie and someone else comes out and helps take care of the needs.

A number of years back we had a tropical storm come through during our stay. Children were kept in the INN lobby, craft room, and mini-theatre. The CMs were FANTASTIC with the kids. Keeping them occupied, entertained, happy, and unaware of the potential storm issues (for two days). They were so patient and ready for the situation.

I HAVE been recipient of assertive direction when there was lightening in the vicinity and I entered the pool deck area. The area was out of bounds and I sure understood that.

I guess the pool area is a real serious issue for the CMs. No misunderstandings and nobody hurt.

Their job is to keep the pool area safe, not to be friendly. If you're trying to engage them in conversation, you're distracting them from doing their job. We've gotten to know a few of the VB CM's pretty well, and I've noticed that their personality while lifeguarding is much different than their off-duty personality. That's the way it should be.

ITA, and in one of my postings I stated that it is a good trait to have for a lifeguard. I was merely trying to say that they may not appear as friendly as some of the CMs are at WDW. You just got a very different vibe from them.
