Hi! My DH and I will be at VB for the first time this Oct 4 through Oct 10 ... have a 1 bedroom villa and have requested an ocean view. We plan to have breakfasts and a handful of lunches/dinners in the villa ... would love suggestions of restaurants and/or reports on restaurants that are good in the area. We will have a rental car and both love to walk as well ... have heard about the botanical garden nearby ... any other places (besides the beach) that would be beautiful/unique? Any suggestions would be helpful...thank you! :)

Hey Sarah, I can point you in the right direction, just check out the previous 18 pages of this thread! You'll be an expert by the time you catch up to your post;)

Hello Sarah,

Welcome to the DISboards. Glad you'll get to experience VB. Mckee botanical gardens is really cool. I'm really interested in the Kayak tour KJJ speaks about. If you are driving from Orlando you might consider a slight detour to Merritt Island National Wildlife Reserve at the Kennedy Space Center. They have a number of hike/bike and drive trails. We particularly like the Black Point drive. The time before our last visit we saw a Florida Panther there. Ranger said it was likely a Bobcat, but we have a photo and the tail is just about touching the ground. We know what we saw.

My BF and I will be at VB in Mid-Nov after 5 nights at BWV. This is our first stay at VB and very excited to see it. :cool1: BF is asking if they have places with live music close by. It looks like Squid Lips does on the week-ends. Anyplace else you would recommend?
Also wondering what the weather is like in November? We usually go to WDW in May so not sure of the Fall weather way over there on the East Coast :) We want to play some golf while we're there and hoping weather will be nice.
Thank you for any of your thoughts!

JoEllen

I have to tell everyone that week 2 of being back at work is not any better than week 1 was, but what it does mean is that we are only 50 weeks away from being at Vero. It is not much, but hey it is all I have.

DisDayDreamer, thanks for the tip and link to Merritt Island ... appreciate it!

My DH wants to do the kayak adventure, but after reading the posts, am not sure I could keep up with him! :) We will see ....

Thanks again!

Thank you DisDayDreamer! Nice to know they have live music on property. Much more convenient!

Just get the double kayak and make him do all the paddling  ;)

Kickapoo, he actually suggested getting a double kayak and offered to do all the paddling! I think he really wants to do it! :)

Sarahtink - Don't be too afraid of the kayak tours. I think Kickapoo had an extra special trip and paddling two through the water in a tandem is a heck of a lot harder.

Have you ever paddled a kayak before? If you know motion to paddle a kayak you should be fine as long as it's not too windy.

We do own a kayak but really only use it for a week in the summer for little paddles. I must admit I was a little apprehensive when going on the the tour. I am now over 40 and in the worst shape in my life both weight and strength wise. What shape you used to be in and things you used to do doesn't matter does it?? I was even concerned that the guide would have brought a life jacket big enough and I wouldn't fit in the boat, etc.   Everything was fine. [a break to regain composure after bearing soul] Really, I think it is doable to most, at least most that have paddled once or twice before, especially if there is little wind.

Go on one of the non Disney sponsored tours. I think you will find them smaller and able to adapt to your needs in a smaller group.

Yes, I didn't mean to scare people away from the tour, I just wanted to give others out there with similar rose colored glasses as to their physical abilities a sort of comedic heads up.

I did survive with no permanent injuries :rotfl: Just my pride was very dented...

This is the list who will be there. Would you like to meet at the pool for a drink?

I'm up for a meet - but Green Cabin Room gets my vote!

How many of us have kids? I've got a 9 & 11 year old that will be close to 10 & 12 by then.

This will work for me. any updates pm me.

Well I finally got some pictures downloaded and to the correct computer so here is a little report about our trip...

Our trip to Vero was great as one would expect but a bit colder then we expected. The trip was 8 nights; 2 at AKV, 1 at Cocoa Beach, and 5 at VB. Initially this was to be a non-WDW vacation for DH but we couldn’t deny our little DD6 a chance to visit Cinderella. We packed a lot into 1.5 days and really enjoyed AKV …but that is for another thread. On the way to VB we stopped at the Kennedy Space Center, spending the night in the Cocoa Beach Hampton Inn before heading to VB on Sunday.

Arrival/Room: We arrived around 5pm on Sunday. I was really curious what BC we would be given. I hadn’t made any requests, since they all seemed great. We were given The Green Turtle Cottage #1475 that was the second one to the south of the pool. This location worked well for us since the pool and ocean access was close. I find there is always that moment of fear as you put the room key in the lock when all the bad room report threads zoom through your head. The door knob/ lock was worn and possibly a footprint was on the door trim leading to my apprehension, but after entering and doing a quick check of place found it to be in very good condition …and you can’t beat that ocean view. I do feel a little embarrassed that our little family was staying there but did get over it quickly. (Originally thought we would have the ILs along). Both the upper front and back decks had 2 loungers and a table and chairs so you could be in the sun or shade all day long. I was happy to see the loungers and was hopping to put them to use. The only negative on this cottage is that the front of the cottage directly faces Villa building 14 making it a little less private.

Weather/Ocean/Erosion : We were somewhat challenged with the weather we received. It was a bit cooler then I had hoped and the wind and waves were very wild. Two out of 4 of the days the wind was in the 20-30 mph range. One day it never made it out of the 60’s , two others were in the low 70’s. I know that Disney just trucked in some sand but I’m not too sure how much is left after the waves we had. We saw a couple feet, maybe even three, of the dune disappear. There now is a 5ft cliff off the dune to the water in front of our BC. We were surprised, from our trip 2 years ago there is not much beach at all.

This is how the beach looked. The water coming very close to the ramp (we have another pic of it swamping the ramp). I'm not sure you can see it, but a the black thing farther down the shore is a 4 wheeler that got stuck between the dune cliff and the water.

Kennedy Space Center (www.kennedyspacecenter.com): I’ll put this here since many do day trips from VB. We did enjoy our time here, probably DD12 and DH most. To me it gave me flash backs of when I was young walking through endless museums with my Dad telling me about everything. We actually broke this up into two days since the tickets are good for two days within a seven day period. Doing a few hours the first day in the visitor center, doing the simulator and watching the Imax movie. We returned the next morning to go on the tour and then a talk with an astronaut. All it all it was a good experience and I could see us going again 5 years or so (when DD6 is that age).

Kayaking: As I mention earlier, this was the highlight of my trip. I just adore manatees and getting to play with one on his own terms was the best. We also saw some dolphins playing really really close as well. I had printed out a couple kayak tour operators before we left but probably would have gone with the Disney organized tour if they had let my DD6 go along just because it was easy. The CM gave me the name and number of the tour operator that runs their tours and they had the exact same tour at the same time with a different guide. Because of the high winds they moved the location from Pine Isand (right near VB) to Round Isand (20 min south). The wind was against us on the way back and was difficult for my DD12 but petting the manatee erased all that. I would recommend this trip to anyone and our guide Ronda was great. Adventure Kayaking with Steve Cox (www.paddleflorida.com) or Tropical Kayak Tours with Ronda Cox (www.TropicalKayakTours.com) (yes, they are married but decided to keep their business separate but do collaborate.)

Environmental Learning Center (www.elcweb.org): There is a very nice little nature center on Wabasso Island right over the tall bridge on your way from to US1 from VB. We went on a scheduled tour for an hour talking about the native plants and animals. They had a nice hands on area for the kids. It was good for us northerners who had been going to FL for a while but never learned the names of some of the basics. They have some boat tours and events that need reservations.

Pool: The slide was a hit with DD6. She was obsessed, even driven to go down the slide continuously. I had to stop her every handful of slides to make sure she had a break and didn’t hurt herself. We swam every day but it was very windy and colder then I would have liked. Can’t really report about chair saving since we usually came later in the day and just found a chair to sent our stuff on and went about our play.

This is usually what I saw of DD6.. (notice the emptiness of the pool area and chattering of teeth)

Other Activities: We used our mini-golf membership to the fullest playing many rounds. We went to one Campfire. It was almost called off because of the wind but was fun. DD6 went to an Unbirthday party and DD12 went biking with DH on the jungle trail loop. We played a few rounds of shuffleboard as well.

Ocean: DH went for a couple morning walks which he enjoyed but made comments about all the erosion. I guess in some places there was no beach left and could not walk without getting wet. DD6 and I collected shells and brought home a popcorn bucket full. We also had some fun in the waved a couple days. The wind and waves were incredible 2 out of the 4 days we were there (20-30 mph) One day the beach was closed to swimming due to rip currents and warnings on the other days. We did see the lifeguard come down and talk to a couple swimmers. Because of the wind, waves, not so much beach and cooler temperature we did not sit down on beach at all (and never used those swap chairs!).

Publix: We stopped at Publix after checkin and stocked up on some breakfast, lunch, snack food and dinner that night. That only left 4 dinners that we ate out. The closet grocery is the Publix on 1, 1.5 miles north of the causway road (510) a total of 4.5 miles.

Capt. Hiram Sand Bar (www.hirams.com) - DH really likes the sand bar and it is a very fun atmosphere. We had some simple foods and drinks. Cheeseburger for me which was really good. Everyone enjoyed their food and drink and view. 3 Thumbs up

Mo Bay Grill (www.mo-baygrill.com) - This was a new adventure choice for us. It is an Jamaican inspired restaurant located on the other side Sebastian near Walmart (in the Publix plaza). We had a great server and everyone was extremely happy with their dinner. I picked this place because I thought it was interesting and the menus looked diverse enough for our family. It had vegetarian fare for DH, more casual food for DD12 and kid food for DD6. I would highly recommend giving Mo Bay a try. 4 enthusiast thumbs up.

Shutters – Well it was close and DD12 wanted to go here. I think she had fond memories from a couple years ago. The menu really isn’t a good fit for us anymore, a couple years ago it was much more diverse. DH only choice was a flat bread which he thought was only OK . DD12 had the barbeque chicken flat bread without the onions and it was too spicy. I had the onion goat cheese flat bread and thought it was pretty good. DD6 was a happy camper with mickey mac and cheese in a mickey plate. The service was not great. They lost our ADR (this has happened last trip too) and the server never came an took the excess plates away from the appitizer, etc. So we are trying to eat with a whole bunch of dirty dishes all over the table. 2 thumbs up (one from DD6, half from me , half from DD12)

Orchid Island Pizzia (www.orchidislandpizzeria.com) – We ordered here the last night. Finally, a night that we could eat on the deck and have an ocean view with dinner. It is definitely NY style, which is not what we are used to, so can’t comment if it is good NY style or not. It was very tasty but thin. 4 thumbs up.

The end of another great trip!

WHOA! :scared1: Is that at high tide?

I'm not quite sure. We had a lot of wave action the 4 days we were there so it wasn't as clear cut. I'll have to look up the time that picture was taken.

That pic is a little tricky. Make sure you realize on that pic that where the sand ends is a 5 ft cliff to the ocean level, so you are not seeing the edge of the water.

This is our first stay at VB and very excited to see it. :cool1: BF is asking if they have places with live music close by. It looks like Squid Lips does on the week-ends. Anyplace else you would recommend?

Capt. Hirams also has live music at their Sand Bar. Haven't been there later for real music so cant give you an opinion, but did see a 'Buffet' type singer one afternoon a couple years ago adding to the atmosphere.
