It is my understanding that I can use my cell phone for free in St. Thomas. Our carrier is Verizon. It looks like we can also text and have internet access with no penalty. Is this correct ???

Yes, you can. I believe there is a charge for texting, but phone calls are included. Check with the verizon site for your plan. Just make sure you are FAR from the ship before you make a call! We were in the dock area and for some reason Verizon chose to drop my call and see it as "roaming." Nothing like an $81 phone call to home! :scared:

I always call before hand and arrange for international service during the port visits per country for all phones (in case we get split up). We get cell coverage and a limited number of texts (I forget how many). On the E Carib cruise, I set up for (then) St. Thomas, & St Maarten only on the days we were in port. For the W Carib, Mexico, Grand Cayman & Jamaica on the port visit days. Nassau for the Bahamian cruise. I never asked about Castaway Cay as it's a privately leased island and I doubt there's a Verizon tower there :). Anyway, setting it up only for the day of the port visit cuts down on the expense, but allows for us to have our phones for emergency communications. Of note, on our upcoming Canada cruise to Saint John, our standard service covers the area so there are no extraordinary international costs.

We have AT&T and I know that STT (and SJU) are included for free in the AT&T plans. I always understood however that most Verizon plans did not include those islands. Best to call Verizon before the cruise to be sure.

Just got off the Fantasy today and our Verizon coverage was horrible! So bad in fact, that I'm dumping Verizon. I had a terrible time getting a connection in St. Thomas. There was pay as you go data on board and texting/phone calls through Verizon, which is a bit pricey. I used to get international coverage through Verizon but now most ports have some kind of free wifi (Tortola now gives you 10 minutes free and then you can buy a card $2 for an hour).
