I am looking at trying to use the rent trade board to sell my points and buy Aulani points but I want to make sure I fully understand the rules.

1) I can only transfer my points to another member 1 per UY
2) Points Transferred into my account retain the original home resort priority and UY
3) Transferred points can be banked but not borrowed
4) You can not transfer banked or borrowed points
5) You can transfer your current UY and next years points

Assuming I have that correct I have a question. Per point 1 I am aware you can only make 1 transfer per year but can you accept multiple transfers? Anyone have any idea how often Aulani points are available on the rent/ transfer board?

Just want to make sure you know that you could transfer your points to someone else OR transfer in Aulani points, not both. If you wanted to transfer in Aulani points, you'd have to rent a reservation to someone else using your points.

It's one transfer per UY, and that's in OR out, not both.

You could transfer out points for one use year (e.g. 2012) and transfer in points for a different use year (e.g. 2013). You can do this at the same time if you want to do that.

I found this thread in search of clarifying transfer rules myself, so let me make sure I understand it.

Here is our situation: We have a March use year, and back in October (with no plans for future travel) we banked our remaining 68 points from 2012 into our 2013 use year. We are now planning an unexpected quick trip to Florida for Feb. 26 thru March 2, 2013 -- the dates are not flexible. So the first 3 nights fall in our 2012 use year, and the last night in 2013 YU. (And believe it or not, I just got off the phone with DVC and there is actually availability for our dates!) Could I transfer 48 of our 2012 banked points to a member (who could then use them through Feb. 28 of 2014) in exchange for 48 of that member's 2012 points (expiring with 2012 YU anytime April through December).

I do know that we could borrow the 48 points from our upcoming 2013 allotment, but I hate to use new points that we may possibly bank through 2015, when we could get rid of these dangling 48 points that are definitely expiring in 2014.

This is all SO confusing to me! Thank you for your help! :confused3

In your case, why not use the one time use points for part of the reservation so you don't have to borrow as many? I know it's an additional cost, but not much really. We did that for last year when we booked after the 7 month window.

Thanks for your reply, Diane. :) I'm unsure of what you mean by the one time use points. We currently own only 80 points at BWV (just enough for Food & Wine every fall), and we banked 68 from 2012, so now we can't use those until March 1. The reservation we now want can only use 20 of those banked points, since our last night is March 1. So then we are stuck with 48 that will expire Feb 2014 (and silly as it sounds, no plans to use them by that date). In addition, for the current reservation we would have to borrow 48 from our new 2013 allotment of 80, leaving just 32 to bank for 2015. Our eventual goal is to bank 2013 and borrow 2015 in order to travel to Aulani. I'm so sorry to be so confusing! (and confused)

With a March Use Year, any reservations from now until 3/1/13 would have to use borrowed points since you already banked your 2012 points into 2103. While you could also try to find another member willing to transfer points to you and accept a transfer of points in exchange, I think you will find that to be far more cumbersome than practical for a relatively small number of points.

I would either borrow the needed points from your 2013 Use Year for the first nights of the stay and use banked points for the rest or, as Diane suggested miniize the number of borrowed points by renting a maximum of 24 points from Member Services (at $15 per point). That would at least reduce the number of points you would need to borrow if that helps.

Personally, I would borrow the points from the next Use Year or just rent the entire reservation from another member or try www.DVCrequest.com for the reservation. You can then try to rent the banked points on the Rent/Trade Board to recoup some of your expense.

Good luck with your decision.

Thanks, Doc, for your helpful advice. Now I understand the one time use points that Diane referred to. We have never used those (haven't used any points in over a year), so I had totally forgotten about that option.

Thank you both for your wise advice. You've given us a lot to think about. As much as I love DVC, it sure isn't easy to be spontaneous with unexpected vacations. :)

And to add, those 48 2012 points you banked, could not be transferred to anyone as banked points are not transferable.

Yikes! I didn't know that -- probably I did learn it back when we bought several years ago, but it's never been an issue for us until now. There is SO much to remember with DVC. Thanks, Sandisw!
