Talk to me about the Verandah child proof locks-my son will have just turned 4 at the time of our cruise. Our last cruise he wasn't quite two and could manage all the locks on the state room door (he is an anomaly-don't let me freak anyone out, and the door was WAY to heavy for him to actually pull on). We could never have our home child proofed with normal child proofing because he would quickly undo them. So my question is-are they something a mechanically minded child could figure out? Thanks all!

The verandah door locks are high off the ground (about 6 feet up), where the red circle is in this picture:

here's a close up of the lock itself:

If your 4 year old could reach the lock, it's not really difficult to turn, but the door itself is pretty heavy for pushing open.

In addition to the high lock, you have to know to turn the door handle as well. If you leave the handle in the "locked" position, the door remains almost impossible to open.

Yep, forgot about the door handle:

This is in the open (unlocked) position. And holding it there while pulling back on the door to open sometimes the handle will not stay totally upright, causing the door lock to engage.

Closed (locked) is when the handle is at the 3:00 position.

My grandson was 3 our last cruise and he couldn't reach it. Sometimes, I even had a hard time opening the door (remembering the lock, handle, and the heavy door) LOL.

The other thing we did when traveling with our grandson, was we had them take the coffee table thingy out of the room so he couldn't climb up on it, plus it gave us more room in our cabin.

Don't forget about the front door too. :)

Just a reminder not to be totally focused on the balcony.

There is a front door too which can lead to ...

JMT

Remove anything movable, some enterprising young children " have" done it, by moving a stool to stand on. YES, my son.

Thanks all! Yes, the outside door last time we put the coffee table in front of at night. I know before our next one we will need to have a long discussion about that door haha. I wish it was up higher similar to the verandah, we just had an ocean view previously but considering upgrading.

Glad for this thread!
Cruising with my sister and she is upset that her husband booked a verandah. My nephew is 7 and my sister is so worried about him going on the verandah by himself. Will share this with her, and hopefully it will ease her mind, at least a little bit!!

I hope it helps! I don't know why more people don't seem to be concerned with this.

I often have problems just with getting the lock in the right position to unlock - I find I keep actually locking the door. Then you have to turn the handle and haul on it pretty hard to get it open. There is a sort of vacuum created because of the air pressure in the room or something that also makes it hard to move in addition to the fact that the door is just heavy.

Once on the balcony, the barrier is about waist high on an adult and you can't climb up on the bars because there is plexiglass on the inside of the bars.

The railing is a little over waist high (depending on your height), but there is a little table out on the balcony the kids can climb on. We have to keep a close eye on our grandson when we were all out there (he is 4 yrs old now and is not allowed to be out there alone).

A 7-year old should be capable of obeying a parental request to not go on the verandah without an adult present, it is not like a toddler with no impulse control.

Not saying her nephew doesn't mind his parents, because I don't know him so that would not be fair to judge. But, I have seen some 7,8 & 9 year olds (or even 15 & 16 year olds) that behave worse than a two year old. If you tell them not to do something, they are going to do it come hell or high water. On the other hand, I have seen some older children and teens that mind every word their parents or others tell them to do.

I still can't get over the story one poster mentioned about their teenaged son climbing over the balcony to climb the rail to 'surprise' mom and dad on their balcony. I think I'd have a heart attack.

One of our Nassau trips a teenager, while in port, jumped off his balcony on a dare from his friends. He survived but once they fished him out of the water, he was confined to his cabin for the rest of the cruise and the parents were fined.

I'm an adult and can barely figure out those freaking door openers. Twist. Turn. Nope. Twist the other way. Turn the other way. NOPE. UUGGGGGG! :headache: Start over again.

I usually go into the room and head straight for the verandah. I ALWAYS prepare to spend a couple minutes being frustated and yelling about it. :rolleyes2

Then... :yay:
