Puzzling over how large a bag can be used as the "personal item" to be stowed under the seat on a Delta flight. Thinking about using a Vera Bradley Weekender, which is technically a couple of inches larger than their stated dimensions for Delta. But the bag is squishable, and won't be packed to capacity. Could also use the Small Duffel, but the Weekender has wonderful pockets which the duffel doesn't. Using a rolling suitcase for the "Carryon" to be stowed in the overhead. Anybody have any experience using a Weekender--or being told it was oversize?

This appears to be 18 1/2" wide, which if it were hard sized, would not fit under a seat. If you pack it lightly, you should be able to squish it enough to fit.

I would personally take a smaller bag for my personal item.

I have several Vera Bradley Weekenders. I have used them multiple times as personal items on Delta, Air Tran, and American. I never fill them completely full, so they always squish completely underneath the seats. The only time I was ever afraid to use one as a personal item was when I was flying Spirit. I'd read too much about how they charge for every little thing. When my mom flies she also uses a Vera Bradley Weekender as a personal item and also has never had a problem.

I've used a weekender, small duffle and a miller bag as personal items obviously at different times and I have never had a problem they all have fit under the seat. One time the weekend was stuffed and I had to turn it sideways but it still fit under the seat. This was on united and/or US Air.

Just wanted to thank those who responded here. We went with the Weekender and it was terrific. Fit perfectly under the seat on two different Delta planes. It was great having the room and the extra pockets it offered; I wouldn't hesitate to take it again. :thumbsup2
