Venting.....Never borrow money from relatives!

First you need to call Discover and explain the situation. I believe they can put a security alert on your account. What this will do is that when the account number is entered on the automated system it will bypass this system and put you through to a representative. At this point the only way to access the account will be through a security word or phrase that the rep will ask.

I will be calling Discover again today and see if they can take us off automated account information.

You need to do more than take off automated information.......You need to make sure this is all back in your names, and that your FIL is out of it!!!! Have them pull the original application information and make the changes so they aren't reporting to the wrong credit bureau. If it doesn't come of your FIL's quickly he can write a letter and/or call the credit agencies and show the documentation from discover, and get it removed. Then at least that mess will be cleared up and you can focus on your family issues.

Why are you letting it stay connected to FIL's credit history???!?

And, for the record, this kind of mess CAN be a big deal. When it happened to us, FIL and MIL went to get a home equity loan for a family emergency and were DENIED because of the extra credit cards and the "ability to go into debt" I felt HORRIBLE! We got it straightened out, and got FIL off ASAP!, but I still felt bad and it took a little time.

Very good advice. :)

Whether the CC is in your FIL's name or not, it still goes against his credit rating and he has a right to be upset.

You should straighten your credit info out before there are any more hurt feelings.

I think the easiest thing to do would be is to have Discover close the acct. and open a new one with more security measures. Tell them why you want to do this. Discover is very good to work with. We have it set up when our card is being used to much or a huge bill is coming through the store has to call in to verify that its us and not someone else.

The credit cards are in OUR names. We applied for them with OUR social security nubmbers and OUR information. Transunion somehow linked their two names together. I understand he doesn't want it on his credit rating. This is nothing we did. It was a mistake on Transunion's end. We CANNOT do anything to change his credit history. That has to be done on his end. Just as I couldn't go in and access or change anything on your credit history. I'd be very glad to get the credit history at Transunion cleared up, but we can't fix their mistakes on someone else's account, FIL or not. I don't see why that seems so hard to understand.

I agree. Good luck!

Another question -- can you get the card in *your* name instead of your DH's name (with your DH listed as one of those who can access/use the card) so that it's less likely to get messed up with FIL's credit history again?

I'd love to, but DH is the primary bread winner in the family. I only started to work again about two years ago and don't make that much or I'd do it in a hearbeat. Discover card is sending us a new card with a password so that FIL can't access information. The problem now is that Discover isn't sure that the new information won't still be showing up on FIL's credit history since it's Transunion's mistake. The horrible thing about Transunion is that you can't talk to a "real" person.

LOL! You have described my inlaws and things that go on with my DH and THEM exactly. Welcome to my world, however my DH is a little older and has finally begun to understand how neurotic they really are. Our DH's should get together and compare notes!

Disnee Dad Says.......................................I got it! Tell DH, that standing up to his parents, is an incredible turn on. If that doesn't work, what will!!!

I disagree about the credit cards. I started a new account when I was layed off. DH's and your salaries are combined for their purposes. Just get it in your name and have him put on the account. It really is possible and simple. They should bend over backwards to help you after this.

I agree FIL is doing something illegal. In Ohio I would consider contacting the state Attorney General's office about this Transunion mess. There are some new guidelines coming in the near future similar to the ones put in place in the medical community this spring. When they are in place it will be much harder for the banking and insurance industries to share your information.

This is one big reason why I do not do any on line or over the phone banking or credit stuff. I like that old paper trail.

DH and FIL have lots of issues. Most importantly to me is how your are treated. If your DH was so worried about where that money went, he should do the bills himself. I would have done just as you did myself. I would have put the money where it was needed at the time. You did nothing wrong here. You did not go out to a day at the spa or to buy several hundred dollars worth of shoes. For heaven sakes, you paid off debt. What is he complaining about ?

This should not be a problem. DW has not worked outside the home for 17 years and has opened accounts with her name as primary several times. In fact, this is very important to establish a credit line in your name in case anything happens to your husband and you need the credit.
