Vent: Ice cream

I love ice cream, and the more variety the better. I prefer not to buy the same kind each time. But I am cursed by having a DH who will only eat chocolate and a DS who will only eat vanilla. It is too expensive to buy three different kinds, besides which if I have that much ice cream in the house I will end up as big as the house it is my weakness. I end up buying vanilla cause DH can just add chocolate sauce. Ho hum. Just had to get that out of my system.

Is decent ice cream very expensive in your area - I just paid $8.99 for a 2L container of Breyers Natural Vanilla (not sure what the conversion is to imperial)

Holy crap! That's expensive ice cream!!!

Buy the combined container of vanilla/chocolate. That will fix the problem with DH and DS.

And I would definitely buy a flavor for myself if I were you. Of course you probably shouldn't take eating advice from me as I ended up having gastric bypass because I was as big as a house. Ice cream may have played a big part in it too.

Now, if I eat it, I eat the sugar free/fat free kind that I only buy from the ice cream parlor because I have to make an effort to get it. I know my weakness!!

At today's exchange rate, $8.99Canadian = $8.15US.

So your ice cream costs roughly 12cents/ounce.

Typically, Breyers Ice Cream is sold in 1.5 quart packages (I can remember the days when the standard unit was 1/2 gallon or 2 quarts).

48 ounces in 1.5 quarts @ 12cents/ounce = $5.76US (or $6.38CAN)

That seems a little high, but we only buy ice cream when it is on sale.

I also only buy ice cream when its on sale and each week at least one brand is buy one get one, so we're good.

I agree with the above also. Try and find the chocolate/vanilla combo carton that would make things easier.

My DD will eat chocolate if necessary, but really prefers vanilla. DH will ONLY eat vanilla or strawberry (high quality strawberry, no "3.99 a gallon" stuff for him). i, on the other hand, IF i could eat ice cream (which i can't anymore) love blue bell banana split, cookies and cream, moose tracks, etc. i LOVE "fancy" flavors of ice cream!

Rotate. You get to pick an icecream flavor. When it's gone, DH gets to pick an icecream flavor. When it's gone kid gets to pick icecream flavor. So forth and so on.

That way everyone gets a chance for icecream choice.

Have you tried Neopolotan? If it's in a brick you could even slice it into 3 parts- chocolate, vanilla and strawberry. We like Chapman's and lately it's been on sale for a buck a litre.

I also recommend the Neapolitan ice cream. Everyone gets a flavor. This way you can mix it up, get a little of each when the mood hits, meanwhile DH & DH each get their own favorite flavors.

Who's doing the shopping?? To be fair you should rotate, and it sounds like you've got a lot of making up to do! I find in my house, that if someone "only" likes a particular flavor, they change their tune pretty quickly when their favorite isn't in the freezer. I think they would rather have ice cream that they "don't like" than no ice cream at all!

Here a 1.5 quart Breyer's container is usually less than $4. Often more like $2.99.

I prefer Blue Bell, and when it's on sale I get it for $3.99. And that still includes an entire half gallon.

It sounds like you pay a lot more in Canada for ice cream than we do in Texas. I typically have 3 or 4 containers of it in our freezer, and it's just me and my husband in the house.

Yup, unfortunately DH is allergic to strawberries.

Holy cow, $1 a litre !! I think Chapman's normally runs around $6.99 for 2 litres.

Overall, things seem to be about 20 to 30% more expensive here in Canada, for no apparent reason, and the exchange rate doesn't account for all of it.

I end up buying everyone the flavor that they want. Plus when dsis comes over I have to get one container of vegan stuff.

I think the pp who said that you should get yourself a pint of whatever you want has the right idea. Do it for yourself at least once in a while.

I get it about once a month and everyone gets there own. Mom just gets the pint. It is all I need.

The rare times we get ice cream we also get pints. I love Haagen Dasz personally.

I loathe ice cream for one specific reason... Variety.

Little story...
I have 6 sisters and no brothers; and these girls love ice cream. One day during a family dinner my Dad sends me to the store to pick up something for dinner. On my way my mom calls me to pick up some extra Vanilla ice cream because it looks like we are going to need it...

...That is when I discovered variety.

I am in the freezer section and am taking a gander and realize that there is like 30 types of Vanilla ice cream. Vanilla, French Vanilla, Vanilla Bean, Double Vanilla; Low Sugar, Low Fat, Non-Fat, Light; Extra Creamy, Slow Churned, Regular.... Then add in like 10 different brands...

At this point I am a lost for for words, I quickly call my mom back... no answer.

So what would you do? you are a non-ice cream eater forced to buy some random Vanilla ice cream. I go with Dreyers Extra Creamy French Vanilla and head on home.

You would have though I started World War 9... 3 sisters yelling at me because I bought a horrible ice cream... who actually likes this stuff? why didn't you call? BLAH BLAH BLAH!

I hate ice cream...

Next time I'm buying Rainbow Sherbet.
