Vent: DVD/BluRay/3D/Digital

A lot of people are turned off from 3D because the first TV sets that came out have active shutter glasses which means the lenses in the glasses electronically alternately darken to block out the picture at the same time as the TV is switching pictures so that each eye is seeing a different image. This flickering gave some people (myself included) eye strain and headaches. It's kinda the same thing as a fluorescent light flickering. They still make active shutter sets but they now also have passive sets which, as I said before, are the same type as they have at the movie theather. The screen has two images interlaced with each other and each glasses lens blocks out part of the image so you only see what each eye should see. It's much less (basically none) eye strain and much more comfortable.

They are actually starting to move towards that. I bought The Hunger Games last week and it only included a blu-ray copy and Ultraviolet copy so I can store it in my could. No DVD version was included. :thumbsup2

I haven't tried to watch anything on a 3D TV, I was actually referring to watching movies in the theater and not getting a headache/migraine anymore. :) It's good that you pointed that out though as I did fail to mention that in my OP. :cool2:

I did buy the Hunger Games with the ultraviolet and the Blu-Ray only, I was excited to see that actually.

What do you use to convert to digital?

I used to be the same way, couldn't watch 3D without getting a horrible headache that usually became a migraine. The first movie that didn't give give me a headache was Avatar, I watched that whole movie with the glasses on and didn't have any problems at all. Since then I've watched multiple 3D movies and have had zero issues with headaches. DD16 and I went to BatB 3D and it was amazing, I want to go see Nemo 3D so badly! :) I don't think it's a craze or fad at all, I think more people will be buying 3D TV's and Blu-Ray players in the near future.

That said, I agree that I don't like the bundles that are out there, I don't need a Blu-Ray and regular DVD, just the Blu-Ray please. :)

I use DVD Decoder and Panzera, both are freeware. The first decrypts, the second converts to a format iTunes will accept. I have Handbrake too but don't like it as well, probably because I was already familiar with Panzera for converting video file types from my phone and camera.

thanks, do they work with Androids? I have an Android phone, not an iPhone. :)

I'm gonna chime in on a related note: I don't often buy movies at all but when I really really really love a movie I want to purchase it, mostly for the DVD extras. Now-a-days you have to buy the bluray copy for 99% of the extras and I don't have a bluray player! In fact, most people I know don't either because they don't think blurays are worth it. We have a home cinema so I understand the importance of an HD movie experience but it just irks me I have to pay more now!

Obviously, the marketing dept. for Disney has learned that having a DVD or BluRay AND a digital copy is a pretty popular combination for many families. But somewhere along the line, someone determined that they can make more money by NOT including the digital copy in their packaging for the DVD/BluRay combo. There are many people are willing to pay extra for that digital copy on iTunes as well.

Making your own digital copy is an option, but there are copyright issues with doing that. The DVD/BluRay has a digital rights protection that you have to circumvent in order to do it. There is software out there that will do it. However, I don't see what the problem is with purchasing the 3D package. With coupon and sale prices, the price for the 3D combo pack is the same as the BluRay/DVD set without digital copy on Amazon. If clutter is a problem, then just throw the 3D disk out or give it to someone you know who does have 3D TV.

When I looked on Amazon the 3D package was $7 more. Obviously if it was the same price as the BluRay it wouldn't be an issue.

Not to get off-topic, but if you want to see a movie in a theater and it's only available in 3D, and you hate 3D (and/or it makes you sick or gives you headaches), there's a solution. Some guys on the internet invented 2D glasses. If you google the term you'll find the site. They just make a 3D movie look like regular 2D.

It doesn't help if you just hate wearing glasses over your regular ones (like me), and they don't work for IMAX films or "active 3D" televisions.

As for the topic of the thread, I don't buy physical media anymore... But if I did, I'd just get the DVD/Blu-Ray combo and make my own digital copy. I know some folks consider it a legal grey area. I do know that Walmart will digitize discs for a small fee that (I think) makes it available through their Vudu cloud service.

There is an $8 electronic coupon for the 3D package. It comes and goes on the website. Scroll down the page a little to find it and refresh if it's not there at first. I'm sure that Disney will come out with a printable coupon as well, closer to the release date.

FYI.... Once you register your rewards code online at Disney Movie Rewards, you can always watch them online as a lot of them give you unlimited streaming of it on Disneymoviesonline.go.com

You won't have it everywhere because Apple products do not support flash but it's there.
