I don't know if this is the proper place to post this but I'm ticked and I need to vent. :offtopic:

To give you some back-story; I work for a local company that is very generous to its employees. To give you one example of their generosity - We have a college in town and during the year, we frequently receive passes to go to games of all kinds and varieties. Not only do we get FREE tickets to go the games (and sit in VIP seating), but they also will have treats, drinks and even sometimes will cater a full meal. Again, we don't pay for any of it. Not a dime.

So today, we get an e-mail from one of the owners saying that during one of the recent games, employees were taking some of the food home with them from the game!!! Not like grabbing a brownie as you walk out the door, but as in putting things in their purses and bags for later (like candy bars, etc). COME ON PEOPLE!!! :sad2: This really upsets me and I just had to vent. I can't stand it when someone is generous and then they get taken advantage of. To me, this is no different than stealing.

It's like those people that will order a side salad and a glass of water when they're paying but if someone else is footing the bill, they get 3 drinks, an appetizer, the filet, dessert, etc. That has always burned me and today I find out that ADULTS that I work with are acting like this. I thought we were out of childhood but I guess not. :confused3 Plus, it ruins it for the rest of us who appreciate it.

Anyway, just had to vent. I frequent this part of the boards the most and knew you gals and guys would understand.

Does anyone else see this kind of thing in their workplace / town, etc?

Sadly, the actions of a few might ruin it for everbody! I hope this isn't the case and perhaps a simple suggestion to those attending would keep things in line....

Well if it's something that's catered, don't they just throw the food out anyway if it's not eaten? So what's wrong with taking it for later? I mean, I can understand if you just got there and you're taking food into your purse, but if it's the end of the night, that food will just get thrown out anyway.

The OP said thy were taking candy bars - I assume they are unopened, hence I doubt they would be thrown out if no one ate them.
And just because something is going to be thrown out, doesn't make it OK to just take it when its rather improper - JMHO

I can understand what you're saying here - and frankly, knowing them, they would probably be OK with someone doing that IF they asked before they just assumed and took it. From the e-mail we got, I took it to mean people were pocketing the treats they have, like the M&Ms, Skittles, etc that are in the individual bags. And these are the large bags of candy, we're not talking the snack sizes that you get at Halloween.

OOoh... I see what you're saying. Sorry, didn't read close enough, I thought you meant things that were prepared already, not things like packets of M&Ms that can get used again. Yea, I would probably be kind of annoyed with that too, although I'll admit I'm somewhat guilty of that. I'm in med school, and the other day we had a hospital fair. The school supplied us with sandwiches, chips, fruit, and cookies along with soda, water, and tea/coffee. It's a rarity for them to go so all out for a lunch for us, but because the hospital people were there, they had to make it nice. I took my food, ate my lunch. But I'll admit I grabbed a couple extra bags of chips for drive home on my way out (2 hours trip). Although I figure for the amount I pay in tuition, and don' see my money going anywhere except to some frivilous accessories (they put in flat screen TV outside the lecture hall that shows pictures of the campus instead of fixing the heat in the building), the least they can do is let me take a couple extra bags of chips.

Still, I feel like it's a different situation when it's the boss providing the treats, versus a school I'm paying waaay too much money for. But that could be because I'm bitter about how they're spending the money I give them. Heat is a nice thing to have in the winter.

When we first moved to town there was an unattended farm stand. The lady sold bags of tomatoes for $1. a bag. That was an incredible bargain. Yet, there were people that would take the tomatoes and not pay or take the money. Trust is an essential part of how we do business and relate to one another. When it breaks down, everyone loses.

If I were there I would have just thought the company paid for package B, that includes X amount of food. The packaged food wouldn't go to waste, but it was something the company paid for, so I would have been uncomfortable letting it sit there unused. Not only would I have grabbed some for myself I would have grabbed my boss a pack of his favourite as well.

I remember when the company ordered pizza one time and many of those who went first loaded up with lots of slices and threw a lot of them away. Those who came last naturally found nothing but empty boxes.

Now they have to have someone watching people and only letting them take two slices. People are so wacky.

I too work for a very generous company. The company used to charter buses and take all of the management and administrative staff (plus family) to Disneyland, paying for park tickets, etc. Then one year, a member of my staff and her husband decided to grab a cab to a bar in Los Angeles, lost track of time, forcing all 3 charter busses to wait while people attempted to locate them. They returned 2 hrs late to the parking lot, very intoxicated.

No more free trips to Disneyland.

My husband and I work at the same place, a small hospital. He works a lot with the Emergency Department staff and at Christmas the employees all brought in food to be shared over the three shifts. One of the guys in his department fixed several plates of food to take home, he took over half of the entire turkey  That was so, so rude! One of the nurses saw him slicing it and putting in on plates and thought how nice it was for him to slice the turkey up, until she went to fix her plate and all of those nice plates of turkey were gone! This is also the same employee they caught on camera stealing from the cafeteria while it is closed :rolleyes2 How he still has a job is beyond me!

A lady I work with takes stuff home also. The last time we had a large catered party she took home a ton of pastries, sandwiches and soft drinks before some of the other staff even had a chance to have any.

We have people who do that here. If there is a luncheon or something like that they will fix themselves a plate, and then make one for their BF/DH at home. Or make one for them to have later and say now they don't have to make dinner. And this is before everyone has gotten served once. I can't beleive I work with these people sometimes. Free food makes people greedy.

A long time ago I saw a special on tv about the diamond industry. I was amazed to hear that when diamonds are sold it is done with a hand shake.

some places are prohibited by law from letting people take catered food off the premises (has to do with the way the venue is licensed). it's generaly not an issue with pre packaged items (candy bars, chips, sodas)-but food served buffet style can be a big no-no. some places are more lax about it but once they get hit with a fine from the health department or get sued (without insurance to cover them) because some yahoo's kids got sick from the cold cuts they boxed up and left unrefridgerated on the table from the end of lunch until their meeting ended at 5-they get much more adherant to their local laws.

Okay, not exactly the same thing, but... when my cousin got married, her aunt (on the other side of the family :)) shared dinner with her husband, then placed HER entire meal in plastic bags in her purse!
