Vent: bedding - what's what

My European mother adopted the use of a top sheet when she got to the US, not just because it was the norm, but because she REALLY hated the hassle of wrestling the duvet in and out of the cover for washing. If you have a larger bed, maneuvering it in flat can be a hassle. I agree with Mom; I keep the top sheet and only change the duvet cover when it is visibly dirty or if I want to change out the color scheme of the room.

Someone here once said something like, wrestling the duvet into the cover was like, "Trying to stuff a wet noodle into a balloon." :lmao:

One time I had such a pretty pattern on the top of my comforter, that instead of covering it with a duvet, I sewed coordinating ribbons at the corners, plus a few along the edges and in the middle, and tied a coordinating top sheet, (also with corresponding ribbons) to the underside. I folded the top over, so it looked like a top sheet was essentially, permanently attached. I just untied the sheet to toss in the laundry and only washed the comforter when necessary.

There's a trick for this, it's really easy. You have your duvet cover inside-out, put your hands inside it to the far corners. Then you grab the corners of the duvet and hold it up - it falls right in. I'm pretty small and I managed it on a large bed by myself without a problem. It takes under a minute :thumbsup2

:thumbsup2Absolutely!

It is really quite easy once you have the knack. Almost as easy as putting on a pillowcase and I use the same method (inside out) for them too. I do this for a king size duvet but toddle from one side of the bed to the other and shake it down. I think it takes me about 3 minutes for a king, much less if DH helps! Less than a minute for a twin. I just love how fresh all my bedding feels once the bottom sheet, pillow cases and the duvet cover are all clean.

I wash my pillows and the duvet itself quite fequently too. They survive.

Yes--it is easy as proverbial pie:thumbsup2 DS is 11 and on the small side. I taught him how to do it last summer and he thought he was big stuff because he could get the king duvets in and his dad couldn't:rotfl2: So, it truly is so simple a child could do it (DH knows the trick now too--DS was so sad when he figured it out:lmao:)

Here's a YouTube video. Slide it to the 0:46 second mark to skip all the extraneous talking at the beginning. Language WARNING: There is one swear word - the $*** word. Sorry, but I couldn't find another video that does it as Kath described.

Yeah that video takes a long time but seriously, once you know how it takes literally under a minute to change the duvet cover. It takes me longer to put the fitted sheet on!

The best part is that you needn't even turn the duvet cover the 'correct' way around once you remove it to wash: keep it "inside out" throughout and it's job-done :thumbsup2

To me, duvet + duvet cover is a lot less hassle and a lot less washing than top sheets, blankets, comforters and bedspreads...
