We opted to rent a wheelchair accessible van for our WDW trip last week instead of relying on Disney transportation for my mom, who uses a heavy-duty powerchair.
We booked the rental over the phone with Rainbow and they were very friendly. The woman who booked us asked how we found out about them and I told her I got the name from the DIS. She was absolutely fascinated that such a place existed.
I confirmed that the van would a Dodge Grand Caravan with a Braun conversion, and requested the front passenger seat be removed in order to give mom a bigger turning radius in the van. We opted for airport delivery and provided our flight information so they could track our flight. We were to meet the driver at baggage claim.
The total charge for the 5 day rental was just over $600--that included the rental fee, taxes, and a $100 airport delivery charge.
When we got in to the airport, we waited at the bottom of the escalators leading to baggage claim, where all of the other drivers seemed to be congregating. We didn't see a sign with our name, so after about 15 minutes we called Rainbow. I was able to reach them right away and they kept me on the line while they called their driver. As it turns out he was waiting by the baggage carousel, so we must have crossed paths without seeing each other.
Once we met up, we quickly signed the rental agreement (standard rental terms, with a 100 mile/day limit) and the driver left to go pull the car right up to the passenger loading zone outside of baggage claim. It took about 10 minutes for him to come back, and he was very helpful getting mom situated in the car and showing us all of the tie downs.
The car was very clean and in good repair. They even added an extra seat belt buckling pin by the tie downs to give us extra options for belt positioning. Within minutes we were all packed up and on our way. Even in a wide-width chair my mom had adequate room to load and turn and had the choice of sitting in the front passenger seat or in the middle of the van.
When we left the airport we set a meet-up time with the driver to return the car at the end of our stay. However, during our trip we heard that crowds at the airport were really bad and we decided to try to get to the airport half an hour earlier. I called Rainbow's after-hours line to ask about the possibility and was able to speak with someone right away to make the change. I was glad to know someone was always reachable and they were very nice about the change.
On our last day we drove the car back to the airport and met up with Rainbow's rep at the airport. They have you drive right up to the departure area for your airline, and the driver meets you there, which is very convenient! The driver helped us unload the car we were all set. It was very quick and easy.
I was really happy with our experience with Rainbow Van Rentals and would not hesitate to recommend them or book them again. If anyone has any questions about our experience I'm happy to answer them!
