Vehicle without a center console?

So, interesting that my thread got pulled up again. While I loved my two minivans, I didn't want to drive one another 7-8 years. 15 was enough.

I just bought a new car this past weekend, a 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee. Yes, I ended up with a console in the middle.
I have no idea where to put my purse or tissue box. I love the car overall, but hate the front seat storage aspect.

Someone needs to consult with some women of various ages when designing cars, that's for sure.

Putting a purse on the floor beside a seat is not safe, especially if it isn't closed 100% or has a long strap, etc. If it ever fell over, slid under your feet, it could be a driving hazard. That's why consoles are important - to restrain objects, and to have a physical barrier by the driver's feet.

Never put bags of groceries behind the driver's seat either - bags can fall over, small objects can roll under seats and get in the way. Bags shouldn't be in passenger seats either. They become projectiles in accidents.

I don't think you're going to find a small car without the center console. And even if it was missing, there wouldn't be room between the seats for a purse unless it's a VERY small purse. The console on my Focus can't be more than 4" wide.

DD#2 just bought a bare-bones 2016 Nissan Versa with a floor shift, but the console doesn't come as far back as between the front seats. I find it a little awkward because I use the console on other cars to help leverage my considerable girth into the passenger seat.

I don't think I have ever had one without. It really depends on the vehicle I guess. In my Caravan I just put my purse in the passenger floorboard if I am by myself... which is always (forever alone lol).

I removed the center console in my older Honda CRV - My purse is on the floor like it was with my minivans. If they put the shifter on the steering column or the dashboard - this would be easy to accomplish. Also don't like the console intruding into leg space area. Looking for a new car - what can I get that will give me some internal space other than a minivan? (Also last time a salesman told me I can put my purse in the back seat I told him I would do that the day that he puts his wallet there - especially with other people in the car.) Cars are now clones - we need a manufacturer to think differently.

Yeah, I hate that. It's not as much as being able to accomodate the purse as it is the way the whole console coming across between the seats and attaching to the dash makes you sit in a cockpit. I don't want to feel hemmed in by plastic. I don't even use my arm rests in my car now because even that bothers me somewhat, and they are small.
I have the the same issue. It’s not just the beautiful and convenient way to put a bag for male or female at your disposable. A console doesn’t do that job as your own. Plus being able to have more freedom. I would take my Lexus RX to the beach and it was easy to get change, slide from one side to another. The console only came forward or opened up with the push of a bottom while I didn’t noticed the rest of it was even there. It was nice. One of the reasons I don’t get motivated to buy a new car is because of the center console. In a minimalistic world of great designs, I am still surprised auto designers are still making the bulky constricted way of driving.

Pretty much only trucks and full size SUVs offer front bench seats.

My last tundra had a fold down console that could be folded up to make a bench. My current one has cavernous storage area, which I much prefer to an extra seat.

One thing to consider is many vehicles like the odyssey have removable center consoles. You would just have an open area with basic storage that might work for you.

The CRV looks like it has a big console, but under the arm rest is just a big empty space. I thought it was pointless, but it actually be perfect or a purse. It would not work for the other poster's dog though. 😂

Welcome to the dis.

OMG....I thought I was the only person that doesn’t like that big counsel between the front seats. My DH and DD always make fun of me for it.

Part of me wants to keep my Toyota Sienna forever so I can have all the open space up front. I’m dreading getting a new car in about 2 years. I’m not a claustrophobic person, but I definitely don’t like feeling all squeezed in when I’m driving :sad2:

Well, you have not changed your mind in the past 6 years, Sandy.

Same thread, 6 years ago

Our odyssey has a console that can be removed with one latch. Just lifts out. You have a couple cup holders and a flat storage area on the floor without it.

I agree with this zombie thread! I went from a series of vans to an Explorer. I love the vehicle except for the console, there is no where to put my purse or tissue box. If I have a passenger my purse ends up on the floor where in winter it gets wet and salty from the snow, Yuk! I use a crossbody bag so I have started looping it over the console into the back seat. Then I can at least grab it fairly easily if I needed it ( like when I might get pulled over) :drive::confused3
