Vegan on board

Food is subjective....but my then 8 yr old had a terrible time as a vegetarian on the Fantasy. She ended up eating a lot of veggie burgers. She orders off the adult menu so no pizza or small kiddy size entrees (the veg options in the MDR were pretty terrible tasting). Now we are cruising with a vegan. What kinds of dishes can he expect in the MDR? Anything we can do to preorder special dishes?

A search should turn up threads about this. We cruised several times when my husband was eating vegan. He would pre order his dinners the night before. He also loves Indian food and after mentioning that he received it. We found the waiters to be very accommodating. We did end up bringing our own almond milk only because he likes non-sweetened. I believe they have options onboard you can request. Make sure you have your son’s dietary preference noted on your reservation and they will ask about it the first night at dinner.

Yep not much to choose from for vegetarians even worse for vegans. My wife is a vegetarian the server bought out some Indian dish. Was pretty good. I don’t know if it’s vegan or not.

Yeah vegan/veg food in MDR's is pretty lame. As someone else mentioned, your server can come up with good alternatives, especially Indian food/rice/pasta.
Also, try going to the MDR desk upon embarking (ask GS where its located) and tell the staff there you have a vegan in your party and to offer alternatives.
Cabanas has pretty decent options for vegans, so if he/she likes a particular dish from cabanas, almost certainly they'll bring it up upon request. I did it a couple of times with a pasta primavera they had at lunch in cabanas (which I loved) when the veg options at the MDR weren't appealing to me.

On the Feb 3 2019 MDAS on the Magic: They were very accommodating for me. The options weren't my culinary fantasies for vegan dishes, but the servers were eager to offer me choices and make sure I was satisfied. They definitely have a vegan pizza they can do ahead of time. And they surprised me with vegan French onion soup at Lumieres! They all seemed to be a little confused about veganism, as though it was a new/complicated concept but again, they were empathetic and eager accommodate. Their vegan offerings could easily be amplified if they consulted the authors of any number of at-home vegan blogs/instagrams. They already have more than enough fresh fruits, vegetables, grains. They just need to know what to do with it. But I think their hearts are in the right place, just need constructive feedback! I sent a kind but constructive email regarding the lack of options at castaway cay. At least a veggie burger would've been great. They could definitely make jackfruit pulled bbq! Would fit right in!

Also, the salad buffet portion of cabanas was delicious!

We're not going to CC but last time we had to wait a very long time for a veggie burger. Good to know about the vegan pizza.

I just found this while looking at something for our upcoming cruise...
Login to the cruiseline website...
At the bottom of your reservation will be "Special Requests"
One of the areas is Dietary requests and Vegan is an option

Yes, this is how they knew of our vegan and vegetarian dietary needs. Also how they knew we need a pack n play and bed rails.

Yes, thanks, I've done that for both the vegan and the vegetarian cruisers.

I follow vegandisneyworld on Instagram, and she just got back from a cruise! I'd keep an eye on her instagram and blog for information about what they'll do on the ship for a vegan.

I'm vegetarian, but sometimes get good ideas from her - like did you know the dockside nachos at Hollywood Studios are vegetarian? They're not advertised as such, but it's a great snack option for me. I'm looking forward to her cruise reviews even if some may not apply to me.

Thanks for this! Just back from breakfast with Mr. Vegan and it made me realize how difficult it could be. I'll definitely follow her on IG.

It can be challenging but it depends what type of food your vegan eater likes. My vegan friends have cruised Disney, Princess and RCCL. I think they liked the food on Disney best.

Generally they get a lot of Indian (which they don't care for too much), gigantic portions (they always feel terrible about the waste), and a whole lot of pasta. Maybe speak up more about what types of food they would like or look at the menu and ask to veganize something. All in all, they love cruising and having someone else cook and prepare their food.

I am all about the vegetarian dishes in the MDRs, I don’t think they are all vegan though. I think the vegetarian dishes on Disney are excellent - the tofu and the Shanghai’d noodles on Pirate night are so good!

I have to agree, most of the vegetarian meals I had were outstanding. Especially the glazed portabello mushrooms and the eggplant curry (not sure if these are vegan or not but there was no obvious dairy). They also brought out some off menu Indian dishes. I am pescetarian so had the fish entree a few meals. I thought the vegetarian dishes were consistently better than the fish entrees. The only vegetarian entree that I really didn't care for the mushroom stuffed pasta.

I need non-sweetened as well. how did you bring that on board?

I am a vegetarian and find the food on board underwhelming compared to the universe of food, but fine when you take into account how many people they are feeding! I would make sure to be very clear and upfront with Disney and with the servers - do you need to worry about cross contamination? I certainly know people who have been vegan for a while who will have ...digestive implications... if there is accidental butter or milk in the dish (or if something non-vegan was on the plate then removed without being fully washed). But if this is someone who is relatively new to being vegan, and is choosing it for moral/environmental reasons, it may be less of an issue.

And, also, it's just a lot of carbs and under-seasoned faux-Indian food. No one will starve, but no one with any dietary restrictions should go into this thinking it will be a culinary treat.

It might seem silly, but our method worked really well! We were on a PC cruise so we needed two weeks worth of milk. We bought cartons of the non-refrigerated milk (I guess that’s obvious!). Maybe 9 cartons or more? I stacked them and wrapped them A LOT in plastic wrap. I actually used the kind movers use because that’s what I had on hand. Then put the whole bundle in a cardboard box with bubble wrap and padding material and checked the box as luggage. When we opened it in our room, one of the cartons had the smallest of leaks, but all the liquid was contained in the 500 layers of plastic wrap. It was super slick (patting myself on the back a lot here)! Hope this helps! :-)
