Our church is doing a western themed vacation bible school this year.
I am looking for budget friendly "western snacks" for the kids.

Any ideas??

I went to our local VBS idea meeting the other night....they had "hay bales" (swiss cake rolls...by little debbie)
"cow feed" like a trail mix with pretzels, chocolate chips, chex cereal, etc
and "moo juice" which was like a melted root beer float..yummy!!

Franks (cut in 1/4ths) and beans? Might be messy, though.
Some kind of "trail mix" would be yummy.

Here's some possibilities:

You might also want to Google Cowboy birthday themes -- you might find snack ideas there. Have fun!

Trail Mix
Beef Jerky
Peanuts (if no one has an allergy)
Pretzels
Root Beer

I remember the old Sat. morning commercials...hanker for a hunka cheese

They made cheese rounds on round circle (Ritz?) crackers...said, "look a wagon wheel!" Also I have seen an article in Family Fun (it's online) for a horse party and they made barn treats...HTH

:cool1:

beans and wienees

cornbread and honey/butter or even corn muffins

corn on the cob in the husks

cornnuts (LOL okay I'm on a cornnut thing at the moment, just threw that in)

bbq on small dinner rolls

pigs in a blanket

Saspirilla and cream (rootbeer floats)

Well its fun reeading this thread. I had another thread on the cb a while ago about decorating for this same theme.

These are fun ideas to read. Our church is just so small and we stilll need 2 teachers, (my ds and I are team teaching 2nd grade).

I dont have any suggestions to offfer. I am just glad that we are able to have ours. The director just usually goes to the warehouse club and picks up stuff for the week. The kids are ok with it.

Best of luck with your VBS.

How about haystacks? I don't have a recipe, but I think you make them with chow mein noodles and butterscotch chips.

do the easy version of smores. . .

graham crackers with chocolate frosting and marshmellows.

this is something the kids can make themselves. put the frosting in condiment cups (like they use at mcdonalds) and use graham cracker sticks to spread the frosting. very little clean up

For your site at VBS - what is the bible verse ? theme of your site ?

We are doing Hero's VBS - our site is Jesus feeds the 5000 people with 2 fish and 5 loaves of bread.

Our intial snack is goldfish - and then we always do snow cones, great on hot summer days.

For a western theme - I would suggest to give each child a small zip lock bag of kid friendly trail mix...chocolate chips, chex corn (gluten free) cereal, and a few raiins, & NO nuts (many allergies).

CHOCOLATE HAYSTACKS

1 (6 oz.) pkg. chocolate chips
1 (6 oz.) pkg. butterscotch chips
1 (3 oz.) pkg. or can chow mein noodles
1 c. Spanish peanuts (optional)

Melt chocolate chips and butterscotch chips together, stirring occasionally. A double boiler works best for this. When completely melted, add noodles and peanuts. Mix well. Drop by spoonsful onto a cookie sheet lined with wax paper. Chill. Makes approximately 2 dozen.

Please consider not doing the peanut thing. Trail mix is really fun but as a peanut allergy parent, it is a real nightmare for us. Peanuts are also a huge choking hazard for under 5!! Peanut butter is a real problem as well because there are so many little ones eating and running around that the stuff can be ANYWHERE.

There is alwasy peanut butter at our VBS and it makes for a difficult week for us.

We bought the Lifeway program Saddle Ranch.

We also have a very small church, but are trying to reach out to the neighborhood kids and hopefully get some of them to continue to come to church.

Thanks for all the ideas so far! I love them!! We aren't doing it till July so I have a few months to come up with snacks

-trail mix or some kind of Cereal mix without the nuts (please keep allergies in mind)
-cowboy cookies (oatmeal cookies with raisins or chocolate chips)
