Variants and the return to normal

I may as well. And before people would look at you funny if you wiped down your seat and tray before you sat down. Not now.

I feel vindicated! ;) (OBVIOUSLY I wish there was no such thing as COVID.)

I think masks will become commonplace in the winter months (cold/flu season) much like they are in Asian nations. And I'm fine with that.

I’ve been doing that for years, and got those looks or eye rolls! No more! Last year in Feb I flew to Mexico and we all (in my row) took out our wipes at the same time, looked at each other and laughed.

Parent of a child with severe food allergies here and we've always wiped down trays and seats and often had funny looks given. My son says he feels safe now that everyone is being so careful with wiping things down and hand washing!

I'm taking the week to week advice....it's all just too much to absorb these days.

I will say that for mental health reasons that I try to only focus on a week to week basis in regards to COVID. yes, I am planning on a 2022 Disney vacation but anything about COVID restrictions or news..my mind can only handle week to week information. I try not to overwhelm myself but that does not mean that Iam not informed. I just cannot handle mentally trying to forecast too much.
I feel the exact same way. My range of emotion goes between I’m never going to the US again to I would go if they opened the border tomorrow.

And by appreciating my family and community. I love to travel. Hope to travel again in a year or so. Hopefully, to WDW. But until then, I'm staying safe and keeping in mind my parents in their 70s, and aunts and close family friends in their late 70s safe and in mind before I take chances. I've learned to appreciate that family and friends health trumps my travel plans. Everyone has to work out what matters most. ps have had close family friends die in the past few months. No funeral. No chance to gather and appreciate their life and accomplishments. Their immediate family will have to go through all of this again in a year or so if they decide to have a celebration of life ceremony post covid. So sad and terrible. Has made me appreciate my life pre-covid so much more and want to keep those around me safe.

I had a trip planned Nov/Dec 2020 that we had to cancel. I hope to go in 2022 but I am no spring chicken anymore so I cannot wait TOO long to go. I will likely always wear a mask in the airport and on the plane. And a trip to WDW from my city in BC requires 3 flights each way. I have been on cruises before and while I enjoyed them, I don’t really think I would want to go on another and that was before covid. I really miss seeing my kids and young grandkids but once the weather gets nicer, I think I will feel comfortable visiting with them outside. I always wear a mask when I go out and since I think we will be wearing them for quite a while, I think I will make myself some pretty ones tomorrow. In the meantime, I am taking advantage of covid restrictions and finally purging my house!

Some interesting points, for sure, taking it week by week is a good idea. That is hard for me, I like to plan things out in advance. By now I'd be looking at summer camps for kiddo and planning any vacation time... but since I am pretty sure travel will be off the table (at least any big trips) there is nothing to plan and keep my mind busy. Even if I couldn't be planning a big Disney trip or cruise, being able to plan stuff for summer would be nice. Kiddo wants to go (tent lmao) camping. I'm not soo keen on that. But maybe?

I got myself a few pretty masks (with 3 layers, so safe) since I think they will be around for a long time. I wear one when I go to stores etc but haven't been wearing it outside yet. I suspect when spring arrives and we start more walking/biking, that I might be wearing one then. We simply don't go outside anywhere other than our yard right now.

This might not be realistic but it would be nice that when things return to normal there will be a greater emphasis on cleanliness in public spaces. If things like public transport can be less crowded too. Then great. With regards to how the vaccine rollout is going and how many cases I think that we are still in the thick of things. I am hopeful that the land border Canada / US will open in the late spring.

I would just add that you should always be hopeful and enjoy the planning process. We were away (HHI, South Carolina) last year when this whole thing really ramped up. We own a couple of timeshares and try to use them as much as possible. So far that has meant planning two more vacations and cancelling them as things have continued to play out. The first cancellation (Laurentians) cost us a few $$, but the second one I didn't commit as hard. It's hard with timeshares because bookings need to be made months in advance. It's a bummer each time we decide to cancel. And it hurts a bit more when the time comes and you are still at home (March break will hurt most this year), but then we just double down and plan again.

We'll see how the next year plays out. We already have two camping reservations lined up for the summer (May 24 and Canada Day) and will try for a couple more weeks as the Provincial Park windows open. We are hopeful for our regular November getaway this year, probably Saranac/Placid if the border is open again. And March 2022 we really hope to be back 'home' in Orlando. But we shall see how it all plays out. My biggest coping strategy is to try not to get too invested in the trip. Now I start planning with the expectation that it may very well not happen at all.

We do expect that travel will look different for a few years. Luckily we usually drive for our vacations; not sure how I'm going to feel about air travel for a while. Automobile travel gives us a lot more control over our environment, more flexibility in travel windows in poor weather, and a lot less stress. Driving north last year as things were shutting down, we were already adapting to the new reality and mostly felt comfortable. Bathroom stops were probably the worst part, but a handful of Lysol wipes helped; PA was interesting because the state closed all the rest stops (later reopened when the truckers revolted).

I expect that some of the adaptations we have made will continue for a long time. I'll be keeping the latex gloves in the car for pumping gas (some stations now have these at the pumps). I'll have wipes in the car for the foreseeable future (actually I usually had them in the car anyway, but used them less as the kids grew up). We always brought some of our road meals along, last March we ordered a couple of delivery pizzas before heading north and kept them in the car cooler. They sustained us through a couple of days driving home along with some sandwiches and cut veggies and dip, only stopped for an occasional drive through coffee.

As I said in an earlier post, things will continue to do what they will do, and I'll sustain myself with the dreaming and planning if that is what it takes. We'll enjoy what life allows to do, and try not to worry too much about what we can't or won't.

We feel the same as you - comfortable with driving since we can have so much more control over our exposure. We did some day trips last year and did a couple one night stays in a hotel, and honestly were very comfortable.

For one of our getaways we were able to choose a hotel that had outside doors, so no dealing with crowded hallways etc... We booked a suite with a kitchen so we could make our own food, which eliminated the need for restaurants. Though a couple times we chose restaurants that offered spacious, well distanced, outdoor seating.

On one of the trips we had to use a traditional hotel, but it wasn't busy and there was no issue maintaining distance. We requested a first floor room so we didn't have to use the elevator. They had a pool which was awesome because they allowed guests to book it for 1 hour intervals - so we had the pool completely to ourselves! We didn't have kitchen facilities there, but did have a fridge, so we brought our own snacks/breakfast items and then just had food delivered from local restaurants.

We only did outdoor attractions/activities, in not crowded places.

I would have 0 qualms in taking a road trip this summer to many different places. I just wouldn't be ready to visit a busy place like Disney, where so much of your time is spent in enclosed areas, in close proximity to others etc...

I would love to see some sort of normal return, I work in an office during the day and do a few shifts in retail a week in the evenings. I am getting more nervous with my retail job and the new variants. I feel like all I do all shift is ask people to pull their masks up and wait for the counter to be cleaned before they come up to purchase. I haven't seen my mom who only lives a few streets up since October when we used to sit out side and visit when it was nicer out. Hopefully this summer we will be able to do that again and visit on the deck with masks. I just won't take the risk of being near her due to my jobs with the public.

We have gone back to just ordering our groceries online and picking up curbside. We also order from the different meal prep companies that deliver and use those for dinners during the week. It is a bit more pricy but it is easy and we don't have to run out to grab little things we need for meals etc.

Last summer/fall we did two trips not far from our town which was nice. The first one I was nervous about before we got there but once we arrived at the hotel and I was able to see what their protocol was like I felt so much better. I still cleaned the room myself to make sure and mostly to make myself feel better. The second one we spent 4 nights and had a kitchen in the unit which was great, we could cook our own food not going out for meals etc.

We live in BC and are hoping we will be able to head off the island in June and spend a week in Osoyoos but that is up in the air pending travel restrictions. I really am looking forward to a little road trip to just clear my head and enjoy a little time away.

I often think no way am I going to the states and then I think well maybe if I could drive down I would. My mind flips and flops mostly because I miss travelling so much. I often will sit and look at rentals or hotels in different areas to see what is available and dream about where we will go first when it is safe to do so.

I would love this, but there's pretty much a 0% chance of it happening. From what I'm hearing, it won't reopen until the majority have been vaccinated - in both countries. Which means we're looking at fall at the earliest.

Yup, I’m not holding my breath for border to open up in 2021 and the key- without having to quarantine. Considering the 2021 cruise ship industry has been shut down. Not a good sign.

Haha, yes! Quite honestly if the border opened up this summer I am at the point I would have NO qualms on going to New Hampshire for a vacation (our normal destination). It's an easy 5 hour drive, we rent a townhouse, bring our own groceries and everything we do there is outside in nature anyways. It really wouldn't be any riskier than traveling within our own province. But DH would still say no way, just because their cases are so much higher than ours.

Just wanted to share this. This is promising news, with it looking like at least the Pfizer vaccine has a good chance of reducing transmission. Basically they are finding that if you get infected 28 days (or more) after getting the vaccine you have a much lower viral load. Meaning you are likely much less contagious. Still has to be studied more. But it’s positive!

My kids fav part of going to the US is grocery shopping for all the foods that are different . I’d be on instacart the minute I crossed the border lol

That’s the first thing I’m going to do! Go across the border to shop at the US Costco and Trader Joes! Living close to the border it was fun to just nip across when I wanted. Will never take that for granted anymore!
