I just cannot imagine the circumstance under which I would want to rent DVC points. If I am going on vacation - I want to FEEL like I am on vacation - that means getting into a made-up bed every night (one I didn't make!!!) - clean towels whenever I want them - having a clean bathroom - having things tidied up - turndown service with my chocolate! - NO KITCHEN and NO WASHING MACHINE - I have those at home and deal with them daily! I don't cook on vacation and I don't want to have to clean up either! HA!
But have good friends who ARE DVC members and they love it - just not my style!
DVC is not for everyone as you are a perfect example...but you need to remember too that DVC has always been considered to be in the HAFH catagory - rather than the Deluxe catagory. Reason being that it's meant to feel as so. That it's a home away from home

While that was the original concept behind it all though, the accommodations with DVC are not only as luxiourious as staying deluxe, but certain ammenities such as the jacuzzi tub, king bed and having an entire living room are giving you so much space to relax & spread out while on vacation, that it makes DVC accomodations just as good or better than the deluxe ones. These extra ammenities can only be found in suites at the regular WDW resort (minus the in room w/d). But it's kind of a trade off I guess to the housekeeping issues. While it may not be for some because they enjoy daily housekeeping and turndown service and such, us members prefer it to intrusive maids banging on the door early in the morning's to get in to clean and having just a small hotel room as oppossed to a whole small apt. Studio's are smaller too than getting a 1bdrm villa but you still get a larger room than most regular WDW hotel rooms and you get a larger bathroom, kitchenette (w/microwave,frige,toster, sink) and a balcony. Still making it worth the trade off for many of us. But again, it's not for everyone.
I realize too we are talking about non members renting points from members however, the same reasons pretty much apply only it involves not owning DVC yourself. It's still a more affordable option to stay in supurb accommodations as oppossed to a regular hotel room if you don't mind the limited housekeeping. I gave someone an example the other day that involved 2 GV rooms at the Poly in Sept. which is lowest point season for DVC. As it turned out it cost somewhere in the neighborhood of $4,000 for a 1 week stay for the 2 rooms. If she wanted to rent the points instead though for a 2bdrm villa (which would sleep up to 8) she could have rented the points and paid only half of that...quite a dramatic saving's IMO

and that included the weekend nights renting points. It was still less expensive even so and they wouldn't have had to move.
If the limited housekeeping thing would make you miserable though, again it's not for everyone. But what a great deal for those who don't mind it and it's a win-win for both the renter and the rentee
Hope that gives a little insight as to why someone would want to rent the points though....I guess it all depends on what one's idea of vacation actually is. Some say
potatoe (po-tay-toe) some say
potatoe (po-tot-toe) . The great thing about WDW is there's something for everyone
