Value of car totalled in accident

Agreeing the crash boxes are compromised. You could not invest in repairing to safety if he were rear ended again.with that high mileage, take the money and look for something not in an accident. No one can objectively state the frame was not involved, off just micro's would have tire wear.

That old, that mileage, to buy back will be nominal to even start to repair. Is it even in the KBB?

I think I got a more or less reasonable settlement. I invested a couple of days in searching and calling lots of car dealers, but had a real hard time finding anything comparable to our 1997 Subaru Outback with 226K miles on it. At first the claims rep said I had to find comparables within 100 miles, but of the three he listed, two were in other states and the one 200 miles away had already been sold. So then he said I could find comps up to 200 miles away. When I provided those, he came back with comps from the whole country. Wait a minute, was my reaction, of course. If he can do the whole country, I need to go back and look in the whole country. In the end, he did some real fuzzy math, but he had come up nearly $1200 from the original offer. In the meantime, I had called my own insurance company and talked to an adjuster there just to see what they would have paid. The very helpful man there said I should have taken the second offer and run, since it was more than he would have paid. When the offer increased again, I decided I'd better not push my luck any more.
