Vacuum recommendation?

So my vacuum just bit the big one and I desperately need to vacuum my floors. AARRRGGHHH!!!!!

I have just a cheap ole GE canister that I got at Walmart a couple of years ago. It's been an okay vacuum, I guess but now it has absolutely NO suction whatsoever!!! I changed the bag and checked the hose for any clogs and can't find anything wrong.

I have 4 rooms of carpet and two rooms of ceramic tile that I vacuum. I would like something with a HUGE amount of suction. I'm not interested in a Kirby (I mean, who would spend that much on a vacuum? It just seems outrageous to me, but oh well) I also just looked at some Oreck vac's. Holy toledo, why are these things so darn expensive?

I know my MIL and SIL both have an older Electrolux and they love it. But still, for a used one, you can still shell out about $400-$500. Is this the norm?

Anyhow, what type do you have and how much do they run, moneywise? Guess I'm going to have to find a way to scrape up some extra $$$ for a stupid vacuum. I hate these types of purchases. Seems like I could always use the $$$ somewhere else, ya know?

I spent $500 on my Dyson and I don't regret it at all. And trust me I am frugal when it comes to spending.

I know a lot of people who have one too and they said they wouldn't have it any other way.

Good luck!

Bissel Healthy Home vac 129$ at home depot rated higher than the dyson's... LOVE IT

How long have you had it? I'm curious about longevity...(sorry to hijack)...

I have a 20 year old Kirby that we don't use because it sooooo heavy...

Yes that is the one. Call your local home depot store they should have them for 129$

Just want to add I couldn't believe how quiet it was when I first got it. I love the brush you can turn off and on with just a touch of a button right up top which is wonderful for my kitchen floors! We have 2 cats and a dog the amount of pet hair it picks up is amazing and disgusting!

I am also looking for a new one. A dyson is more than I can afford, anyone else have the bissell healthy home?

Really? That's too good to pass up even if it is heavy like all the reviews I'm reading...I'll just make DH do it! lol

it is heavy but its got some serious sucking power

We have the #1 Consumer Reports rated vacuum from last year (the newer model is #1 this year, I think). It's from Sears, and it's the Kenmore Progressive Direct Drive. It was less than $200, and we've been THRILLED with it. It does require bags, but we actually don't like bagless because of all the dust/gunk remaining in the tube, and then released when you empty. Bad for the allergies!

I just take it outside to empty it. :thumbsup2

I love my Dyson and will never buy another brand again. :)
