Vacuum cleaners

Does anyone here have a shark that could be compared to a hoover? I'm curious as to how they run compared to another brand.

Well, with two teen sons and a golden retreiver I have been known to wear out vacuums. Lets see....

I had hoover for years and it was okay.

Got Eureka and man that thing can suck! The wheels kept falling off.

Next was a Sharp. I got the least expensive and liked it but the boys broke it.

Next was an high end Panasonic as it was top rated by Consumer Reports. I did not like this machine much. I didn't like the whole thing. Too many whistles and bells and it fell apart.

Now we bought another Eureka. I have the self propelled "wind tunnel" version. This machine is great. It picks up so much stuff it is amazing. Lets just say my house was cleaned by a cleaning service 2 days before I bought it and DH ran it through the house and had to empty it 3 times. I got it for about $150 at Kohls on sale. When isn't there a sale at Kohls? We bought this model as the wheels are encased in the housing so the likelyhood of them falling off is minimal.

Moral...go Eureka if you want a powerful motor and good suction. The old tank we had years ago that the wheels fell off and were replaced by Eureka for us...is still in the garage doing car clean out duty after 16 years.

We're needing a new one soon because we have an old Electrolux............their motto is "Nothing sucks like Electrolux" but we found their machines very lacking in that department.

My SIL just bought a Dyson and says it is the best thing ever. They did research before they bought and said the reviews were all good but they were still suprised at how well it worked. The first time they used it they had to empty several times since it picked so much stuff out of the carpet. They have 2 Bassett Hounds and got the Pet hair version. There website is www.dyson.com

I'm considering getting one but my Hoover is still working but barely.

Like Janette's sister (*edit: in-law! ), I too did a LOT of research and finally bought myself a Dyson. I have heard/read GREAT things about them. I also bought the animal version... it's still in the box though! Haven't used it yet! But I have many friends who love it, especially for allergy problems and pet hair. Exactly what I needed!

And honestly, I bought it at Linens N Things yesterday with a 20% off coupon which ended up being $100 off!

Hoover is a long standing name in Ireland, to the extent that most people don't "vacuum", they "hoover".
I remember when my parents had a house in Florida, my Mum was explaining to her neighbor that she had to do the "hoovering", and her neighbor said "I have an Electrolux, does that mean I have to do the "Electroluxing""?!
I have a VAX, and I had an outside cleaner in a while ago who was really impressed by the suction in it. However, I don't think it's great and will probably go for a Dyson next time. Richard Dyson has an alternative way of looking at things and creates really good machines, I believe his washing machines are fantastic.

I had a Hoover first - lasted about 2 yrs.; got a Eureka which lasted quite a while actually - I'd say about 7-8 yrs.; finally decided to get a "real" vacuum and got a Kirby (G4) - I'll tell you, this is the greatest vacuum in the world.

I remember hearing people talk about "Hoovering" when I was younger. I lived in different parts of the US while growing up, and I can't remember what region that was from.

I had a Hoover for about 20 years, but when I got Pergo floors about 7 years ago it didn't pick up very well and blew the dirt out the back. I'm sure there are newer Hoovers that do work on hard surfaces.

I got an Oreck which I am very happy with. It has no bells or whistles but is very light weight and is so easy to pick up that I use it more often.

When my uncle went into a retirement home he left some stuff in our garage. I found an old Kirby that must be 50 or 60 years old. I use it to sweep off the outdoor carpeting, and it still works.
