So just had a bit of a thought... Should we get vaccinations for 3 day Bahamas Cruise?

It hadn't even occurred to me until this morning! I went to the Dominican Republic in 2007 and had a few jabs for that which means I might still be covered but BF didn't have to get any because at that point he was all up to date. Have looked on various travel websites which recommend Hep A, Hep B and Tetanus. Some mention Typhoid too. However on the Disboards many people have said they didn't bother with any vaccines :confused3

So what's been the case in your guys experience? I fainted getting the last set of jabs so fingers crossed I'll be still covered :rotfl:

i don't know about the others, but tetanus is a vaccine that you should be up to date on no matter where you live...
adults should get a booster vaccine against tetanus every 10 years.

No injections needed, ive been to most of the caribbean and never had any, just keepnup to date with tetnus

Only ever had injections for kenya

The only vaccination you will need is the "anti taxi driver/hair braiding injection"! When we cruised DCL we got off the ship at Nassau, walked through the straw market and got back on the Wonder. A total of 20 minutes. It's an awful place.

Thanks everyone, that's really put my mind at ease! I'll definitely check about my tetanus, and leave the rest... phew!

It's funny you say that, BF and I have been talking about wether to bother visiting Nassau, we really want to spend as much time as possible exploring the ship and that would be a great time to do it!

If you only have a 3 day cruise then don't bother getting off the ship. The ship is the draw, not Nassau. The ship is quieter and it gives you a good chance to enjoy the facilities.

I had a weeks honeymoon there and to be honest after spending 2 weeks in florida prior i was bored. Lovely beaches but thts abt it. May get off for a beach walk and db wants passport stamp but thts it. Plenty love it there so u do what u want ariel. Each to there own. Nice to say uv been.
Regards tetanus its for life now. No need for booster only if u need it ie dog bite rusty nail. Mind u the guidelines may change again!!

i don't know what you're looking at, but tetanus boosters are required every 10 years.

perhaps they have something different in the UK, but i tend to doubt it.

perhaps the UK is trying to save money by not administering the required booster...dunno...

I used to work for Nhs direct beth and now just qualified as a nurse:cool1: i know tht the advice we gave was up todate from the health protection agency and it said one dose unless injured bitten or traveling to places where rife and then a booster if not had one within 10 years. Now whether its changed i dont know but i know in Ae we give them to anyone thts had wounds to there skin ie bitten foreign objects etc. Soz for confusion beth

Heres the web address i used to give info from.

yup - that's in the UK - must be a money saving measure, as you do not get immunity for life from the Td tetanus vaccine.

In the US and many other countries, the official government guidelines recommend that you get a booster every 10 years. Though most people don't since most people aren't under the sort or regular medical care that follows up on this sort of thing.

Which is why the guidelines to medical professionals (doctors/nurses) when dealing with any injury at risk of resulting in tetanus call for a tetanus vaccine.
Doctors/nurses are instructed to assume the person has not received a booster and to administer one (since there is no danger in receiving one in a shorter period of time than 10 years).

I agree beth. The nhs are just cost cutting. A lt of people dont even know if they hv had one:rotfl:Thts why they are automatically given one in ae presenting with injuries. Its like the TB vac and tht they hv stopped it in schools. Kids only get it if they hv a family history of tb!!! Otherwise off u go and line the gp' s private prescription pockets. Anyway dont start me:cutie:

yes, i just got a tetanus shot a few months ago when i cut myself on our fence.
i couldn't remember when i'd last had one, so the nurse gave me one.
