Vacationing in San Diego

I'm going with a friend to San Diego at the end of August. Any suggestions on where to stay, what to do, where to eat, how to get around etc? We're looking for a fairly inexpensive hotel that isn't a complete dump and somewhere near seaworld/beaches. Thanks in advance for any advice!
