Hi all,

We are heading back to our happy place again in March 2012. Our son will be 27 months and too big for a pack n play but I worry he will fall out of a normal bed (he's a wriggler). We are staying off property in our timeshare unit which does have the sofa convert but that would mean making up bed each day and limiting the use of the living area. The resort will offer a roll away bed for $40 per week which would fit in the master bedroom but again I worry about falling.

What would you do? I've been looking at the inflatable air beds for kids with the raised sides. Or maybe bed rails on the rollaway. We are from the uk so it would need to be fairly light and small to pack.

I looked at renting but again it seemed expensive.

Help please. Thanks.

rent a toddler bed from A Baby's Best Friend. Go to ABBF.com

We use this travel bed. It also has a wheeling duffle that you can use for traveling. My daughter is now 4 and she still fits great in it. It comes with it's own air pump and it's very easy to blow up. We've used it ALOT for all our traveling and for sleep overs or when one of our kids is sick to put on the floor in our bedroom at home.

We use that one as well and it has worked great for my son (2.5 years old).

We used a blow-up mattress from Walmart. It is toddler sized. It doesn't have the bumpers, but it has a zip on blanket that holds them in. She is almost 4 now, and even though we are staying at POR witha trundle this time, I am taking this- because she will probably use this. It was only $25-$30

You could just take the mattress off of the roll away bed and put it on the floor- even ask the place to take the frame away so you don't have it taking up space. Then if he rolled off it wouldn't be a big deal. I try to be minimalist about things, so I wouldn't want to pay for and lug around an inflatable mattress around, especially if I was coming from out of the country. You could rent a bed as somebody said, but if you don't like the mattress on the floor idea, then you could have some of these shipped to where you are staying:

Then take them with you or just leave them. They're not very expensive.

Can you put him in a bed and just put chairs along the sides, acting as bedrails? That's what we have done in the past.

What does he sleep in at home?? I would try to keep it as close as possible even if it means renting...so worth it for EVERYONE to sleep better. If he is used to a crib, you can rent a full size one and that would also contain him to prevent his getting up at night if that would be an issue.

We just put pillows next to the bed to soften the blow! Really it's been very rare the my kids have fallen out of a bed, but they were both in a bed from just over 1 year. I do think that OP should take into account what her child sleeps in at home.

I have not tried this myself, but my girlfriend used to put two pool noodles under the fitted sheet to act as a bumpers. I'm not sure it would hold back a 3.5 year old but it might act as a gentle reminder.

We have a tuckaire inflatable bed. I got mine for $20 from craigslist so it was a bargain and worked well for our 18 month old so I think your baby would be fine with it. But, it comes with a pump and is kind of heavy to lug around, especially since you'll be coming from overseas. I like the idea of the pool noodle under the sheets. Extra pillows or rolled up towels work too. At home my kids have a foam bumper under their sheets on their regular beds so that is essentially the same thing.

My dd 2 at the time slept in the big bed we just got extra pillows and she was so tired fell right asleep and never once as any of them ever fallen out of bed

I would either just do the roll away bed and position it in a place next to the regular bed and the wall 'snug' fit. OR I would just sleep with him myself in a regular bed - maybe put a chair on the other side. Or even put him in the middle of a bigger bed with some extra pillows around him.

We've used the Regalo Cot for my dd from when she was a toddler until she was 5.5 and it's been a great solution for us.

It collapses down like those portable chairs and it fits perfectly in our suitcase (which is the next size up from a carry on, so not too big). We place it in the center of the suitcase and stuff socks and misc items between the bars and we don't lose much packing space from it that way. :thumbsup2

This is also what we used for 5-6 trips...basically since he was 2 years old. Worked great, and didn't take up a ton of room in our suitcase. We usually stay in a 1 bedroom DVC unit but my mom usually sleeps on the pull out in the living room. So we would set this up in the bedroom area in the corner and it worked just fine.

He is a very tall 5 year old now so our last trip we bought a twin sized Aerobed Extra Bed that has the little pump included. It was about $50 but pretty good quality and again folds up pretty small. We do need to pack a fittend and flat sheet for it which don't take up much room. He just uses a pillow and blanket from the extras in the closet at the resort. Super easy and we are all glad to have our own sleeping space!

We have inflateable bed rails from One Step Ahead that tuck under the fitted sheet. We used them in a rental house in Orlando and on a cruise ship. They work really well and are super easy to travel with.

I let my kids fall out of the bed at home. They didn't do it much. ;) And by the time they were travelling age (we didn't travel with them when they were super young) they had stopped falling out of beds because they'd learned. You do want to make sure that they aren't in a place where falling out of bed means hitting the head on a nightstand - which is controllable at home, but not in a hotel room.

However, in a hotel room I'd just do a blow up mattress or a camping roll on the floor.

Like pp - I just let them learn that falling out of bed isn't fun. Put pillows next to them on the big bed, then if you are still nervous about it, maybe something soft to land on on the sides of the bed.

But, FWIW, my kids are squirmy, twitching, moving all night kind of kids and its extremely rare that they fall out of bed. Neither one ever had a crib, or any kind of bed system that had side rails, etc. Both have been sleeping in regular beds since they were born, though.

I rented a toddler bed for my son, but he didn't end up sleeping in it. I had him ina twin size bed since before he was 2 so he just wasn't used to it. Definately do something that your child is used to. He he sleeps in a crib at home, rent a crib (it may be $$, but it is worth it because the whole family will be able to sleep) if he sleeps in a regular bed, use the sofa bed with chairs pushed up against the sides (or pillows, or noodles, orwhatever you choose) Expecting a toddler to sleep on the floor (even in a blow-up bed) may not work. They are creatures of habit and will most likely do much better in what they are currently used to.

I bought these for my twins when they were 4. It worked "okay" for dd, but was SO loud with any movement. However, ds would wake up many times, having rolled over, with him on the floor, and the mattress on top of him. It broke by day 3. I threw the other one out.
