That is what I was thinking too!
There is no way I could afford that "free" DVC mentioned....ok, well, I could, but it isn't what we spend our money on.
But, I can't even afford "free" dining!
Here is our vacation to Disney....other vacations vary:
$200-$250- SkyAuction Condo for 7 nights
$750- Disney YES hoppers (occasionally we get APs too)
$200- food for the week (plus about $150 from our normal grocery budget)
$250- gas to get there and back and around Orlando
$100- dog sitting to the neighbor
$1500- total for a family of 5
If we have any Disney rewards dollars from Disney Visa we use that to off-set the price as well, making it even less.
The way we do Disney is NOT the way most like to do Disney, but for us, this works. We are not huge fans of Disney food, although we have eaten at most Disney places as we do eat at least two meals in the parks each visit. We also don't like staying in hotel rooms anymore, and with 3 kids, the Values aren't even an option anymore. A condo on-site is about the same price for ONE NIGHT that we spend for an entire week off-site, so we just can't justify staying on-site.
Now, we do travel off-season and that helps save $$. We also carry one of these into the parks and eat most of our own food:

I got it at Target for $27, but it has saved us hundreds! Between Disney trips and day trips to the zoo or museums or parks......I love this backpack! It can easily carry a full meal, lots of waters, and heavy snacks for a family of 5 for the day.

Not to be too technical, but DVC isn't free, and any calculation of annual vacation costs would have to include at least the yearly maintenance fees. We used to own 500 points, and that ran us about $2,000 a year. And that's not even factoring in the initial cost, opportunity cost....that kind of thing. The only way DVC is free is if someone bought it for you and pays the yearly maintenance.
