I had a 15 minute phone interview this past Wednesday and now have a face-to-face interview for this particular company on Monday. I'm looking forward to this, but I'm not sure how to address V.O.E's. I've had many companies calling my current place of employement looking to do verifications on other employees (past and current) and I've had to give them a different number b/c personnel files are no longer here.

So my question is: Do I put a notation on the application if I am filling one out? I don't even know how to address this.

Thanks :)

When I have answered a call from a VOE they only wanted to know did the person really work there from whatever date to whatever date. It was not really a refrence check kind of thing. Im sure when they call your past employer somebody should be able to direct them to the department that will verify this. I would not think its necessary for you to direct them where to call for the verification.

I've always felt odd giving out my current employers phone number, knowing that they would call. If I was looking for a new job, I usuall keep it quiet until i find something.

I'm the receptionist where I am right now and have the VOE information up at the desk for whoever covers for me when I'm not in. Not too sure if the person who will be up here when I leave will even bother to look at it

Oh, I have no problem with anyone calling my current employer. In fact, I have about 5 director/managers as references because I work for them (one being my manager).

In a normal situation, yeah, I would be quiet about looking. However, this isn't a normal situation. Our building was informed the last week of August that our facility (the only one owned by the company) will be closed and sold as early as December and no later than the end of March. I was told by my boss last month that it would be a good idea to start looking for another job since I am "at risk" and "tied" to the building. Meaning, once the building goes, I go. There are three of us in my group that will be losing our jobs b/c of this as well as the entire A/P dept (1 out of 3 sattelite offices that is in our building).

I'm really going to miss working for my current employer :sad1: . I've been here for almost 7 1/2 years and have grown so much and come to know so many employees in the other states. To me it's like saying good-bye to your H.S. friends at graduation b/c everyone goes in different directions and/or colleges in other states.

Do you have paperwork from your old job(s)?

It's one of the reasons to keep copies of old job reviews, especially if they're positive. You can casually say "if you can't reach anybody there, I have old performance reviews if you'd like to see them"

That's what I'd also say if I were looking but didn't want my present employer to know yet -- volunteer your last few performance reviews.

This is also a guard against a "new" boss coming in who doesn't like you and suddenly needing to rely on their recommendation. If you've got years of praise and then this person is negative, you have some defense against it.

When you fill out the application there should be a box to check next to each current/former employers name indicating that it's OK to contact them. If that box/question is not there, just right in "Please do not contact."

A responsible recruiter/HR person wouldn't dream of contacting the current place of employment until after an offer is accepted. If a recruiter/HR person I was interviewing with contacted my current employer there is no way I would accept a position there. If they don't have the brains to figure out that is wrong, I have to wonder what else is going on in that company.
