UY Confusion! HELP!

I think I'll be confused about the use year until my 77th birthday....... posting it here in hopes of more help.

HERE'S WHAT HAPPENED. I bought my membership in April on a DCL cruise with the incentive of their gift of 160 points for the UY 2011, so really we started with 320. We went ahead and booked an AKV stay in January 2013 with 63 of our points. Banked the rest of the 160 and are planning on borrowing 20-something points for a June trip to Aulani, and still be able to go to WDW for Food and Wine in October 2013.

On DVCMember.Com, it says "This Use Year's remaining Vacation Points for Member ID number will expire on the last business day of November 2012."

I have 257 points remaining for UY 2012. Can we use these points toward a vacation in June 2013 to Aulani? SUPER CONFUSED!

Ok obviously you have a December use year since it said your points expire at the end of November.

Any points that are going to expire at the end of Nov. 2012 have to be used for trips that occur before that date. Those would be 2011 Use year points.

What you have to remember about Use Year, it is truly about when are you going to USE the points, not about booking.

Use year points from Dec. 2012 are good until the end of Nov. 2013.

so when i first purchased, my sales guy told me that i should just go ahead and bank 160. so we're technically working off of the 160 from 2012, with the 2011 points banked....

i think i need to call them tomorrow, i really don't want to lose any points, especially seeing all the bigger trips we have on the horizon...

With a December Use year you are going to have to throw away in your mind the traditional calendar and think about the fact that on Dec. 1 of each year you are given your points to USE for the next 12 months.

If you don't use them during those 12 months, or bank them, then you do lose them.

Also if you bank points they become the USE year you bank them into.

If you borrow, they become the USE year you borrowed into.

Both are final transactions.

Something you can do to help get a mental picture, is to print off a blank 12 month calendar and let the first month be December. I keep one by my computer with DVC Use year at the top. It helps to get a mental picture.

Thank you! So I'm finding that we're going to use an average of 160 points per year, give or take. As long as I bank those 70 or so, we can start adding up points, right?

OK, based on your question on another thread, if you mean can you put a few points each year in the bank and they stay there. No, you can't. Everything is on a 12 month basis.

Say you have 2012 points and you bank them into 2013, they will expire at the end of your 2013 Use year which for you is end of Nov. 2014. You can't keep banked points for longer than the 12 months of the use year you banked them into.
