UTI and Cipro..scared to take it?!

Thanks everyone. I went ahead and picked it up after work. I'm to take 1 250 MG twice a day for 5 days. The Pharmacist said to eat yogurt 2-3 times a day and I also picked up Uricalm CranGaurd with Cranberry Extract & D-Mannose (instead of the juice, since I'm not big on cranberry juice). She said to take that before bed and if possible hold off an my multivitamins, etc until after I finish the antibiotics (didn't think to ask her why at the time).

The only side affect I have had from cipro was a yeast infection. This is a common enough side affect that a lot of providors will send in a script for diflucan at the same time and tell you to take it only if needed.

yogurt prevent the yeast infections

The side effects of allowing a UTI to spread to your kidneys is far worse than from taking the Cipro. Take it. If you start experiencing side effects, call your doctor. ALL antibiotics have side effects. In the future, just don't read about them. Take the medicine and if you start having issues, THEN look at the pamphlet.

Amen!

I went into the hospital thinking I had the early signs of a kidney infection. Went to pee in a cup - straight brown blood! Terrifying.

UTI went up into my kidneys and I really had no symptoms. It's scary.

Take the Cipro. There's possible side effects with every drug, but Cipro works well with this stuff.

Cipro is my choice with an UTI. Also cranberry juice can upset your stomach while on the meds. I take a daily Cranberry pill with Vitamin C. Seems to be working to keep them away. The doctor said to use two after relations and or if I feel something coming on. (2 is the actual dose, my doctor said to only take one per day)

read the side effects and reviews of any medication.
they all have their horror stories.

we can't tell you what to do.

talk to your pharmacist and if you're still concerned then talk to your doctor.

I'm allergic to Cipro. After taking it for a week I broke out in an itchy rash from head to toe.

This drug is on my "do not prescribe" list with my doctor. It tore my stomach up so bad. I would be plugged up, and severe stomach cramps like I've never experienced before.

With the symptoms you describe, I would hesitate to offer any advice on home remedy-type solutions to try at this point. For the future however, at the first sign of UTI symptoms, try the D-Mannose that you bought (1 tsp dissolved in water every 2-3 hours for a few days). If your infection is caused by E Coli, as many UTI's are, D-Mannose has been shown to clear the infection very effectively. If it's caused by another organism, you'll see no improvement and can treat with an antibiotic after trying for a day or so. I tried it myself (because of my history I have to be very careful of antibiotic use), and it worked like a charm! I had very bad UTI symptoms and they improved within a day and were gone the next. I even recultured at my Dr's and it came back clear. Just an FYI for if it happens again. Good luck to you!

Just so you can see how other meds compare look up Levaquin, Bactrim, Macrobid and read their side effects. I have recurrent UTI's and those are the three main meds I have been given along with Cipro and another one I cannot remember that I needed to be switched to after my culture came back. If you are still concerned call now and ask to be put on something else but don't delay.
Keflex maybe? It's not used too often for UTIs but it can be. I also get recurrent UTIs so I know the issues that come with all of that. I also have a chronic bladder condition and have been dealing with possible kidney stones. Yay me! LMAO. Oh, and I am allergic to Bactrim AND Keflex now. As in, I can't breathe allergic.

OP, I have taken Cipro many a time for UTIs and have had no issues with it. Well, except for the yeast infections. And before I get the "eat yogurt" comment like another did, I actually can not have yogurt. So I get a prescription of diflucan x2 whenever I do antibiotics.

I've taken my first two and getting ready to take my third...so far so good, maybe just a little belly upset. Symptoms seem to be getting a tad better..I slept good (first time in a wk)
Thanks again

I took Cipro 5 years ago after having emergency gall bladder surgery. My family went to WDW the day after my surgery (already planned. Delta wouldn't let us change without huge penalty). Honestly, I didn't read the side effects. I rested the first day while DH took kids to the parks. On my first day in the park, walking slowly, my right Achilles' tendon tore. It had never had issues before. I took me a long time to make the connection, but I will not take Cipro, Levaquin, or anything in that family of meds. It is a rare side effect, but if it happened to me once, it could happen again. Now I have to be super careful with shoes. Even so, it still flares up sometimes. I've been in a boot for 3 weeks to try to calm it down now.

That's what scared me the most since mine is already weak! I try to be mindful going up stairs, etc! But..I'm so afraid it's going to re-aggervate it

I forgot to mention it yesterday. I'm a bit on the tired side myself lately! Apparently the reason for the tendon rupture warning on taking Cipro is likely due to it being an antibiotic made with fluoride or Fluoroquinolones. You can do a search on Fluoroquinolones and find good information. I guess some people take turmeric when taking Cipro, to trying to help avoid that problem. If you find yourself having trouble, doing a search for "Floxies" might help also.

I just picked up some turmeric to take. It had great reviews on it! Thank you

I hate reading medication side effect labels since every one of them causes something!

The only time I read them is when I am taking something and start feel... off. Then I will look through the side effects to see if it could be the meds or something else.
