Uterine Ablation?

OMG...I had mine done due to cancer. the procedure was fine. But now...18 months later, I want to hang myself. My pain is so bad, that time of the month just sucks........I have 3 1/2 bad weeks out of 4!
I perosnally would never do it again, (thou I had no choice)

Had one done almost 2 years ago. It did not work for me. I have the same amount of bleeding now and longer periods because they start out lighter and then get as heavy as they used to be.

I knew going in that it doesn't work for everyone. They also make it harder for Doctors to detect uterine abnormalities such as cancer (or so they say in the brochures) so I would definately ask a lot of questions.

I had Essure done at the same time so I was completely out. I had terrible cramping afterward and was very tired but the next day I was fine. I broke out in hives for 2 months but my Dr. thins that was due to something in the anesthesia.

I have my annual physical in a few weeks and I'm going to ask my Dr. what he thinks I should do now. Has anyone ever had a repeat ablation?

CathyrnRose,

Given you experiences, I'd be running to my GYN for this. The tough decision for me is that I have NONE of these problems. I have my period for the usual 6 days, it's very regular, no in-between bleeding, NOTHING. I have about 2 days of heaviness and clots. My issue is that I have iron deficiency anemia and they think that my period must be the cause as nothing else can be found. I'm not so sure. So, since I'm not really suffering, it's kind of hard to subject myself to the procedure.

And you know - for as long and often and heavy I had my period, I did *NOT* have any anemia.

So, yeah- why have this done with a 'maybe its this' diagnosis - I understand what youre saying.

I am seriously considering an ablation because my periods are miserable. I've been on every pill out there and nothing seems to work. Well, they work as far as killing my sex drive is concerned, but not in controlling the length, frequency, and amount of my periods.

Anyway, have any of you had this procedure after one or more c-section(s)? I'm wondering if scar tissue could be a problem?

I researched having this done, doctor wasn't happy with success rate on women who have large fibroids (like me). I didn't have the patience to have it done-then wait and see-so I took his advice and had a total hysterectomy. Couldn't be happier. Now that it's over I realize that I had been dealing with an awful hormone imbalance for years. I feel wonderful, aside from pesky hot flashes. You and your doc need to decide what's best for you-many women have had good results with ablation. I would've opted for that choice had I not had a huge fibroid and a bunch of small ones.

I'm thinking about giving the Mirena IUD a try. It all but stopped my cousin's periods. She just has some spotting now. She used to be a major flooder.

I've had 3 c-sections and I had it done about 10 years ago. This is when they still did the ballon ones.

I had it done on a friday and went back to work the next day which was a huge mistake, but the doctor wouldn't give me the time off. My periods were better for a few years, but now while they aren't as bad as they were then, they are still heavy and painful.

I would have it done again, but I'm not sure if you can have it done more than once.

I had mine done about 3 1/2 years ago. It was as an outpatient in the ambulatory part of the hospital. I had the Therma-choice done, had very little pain after, minimal light pink staining and never got my period again. I have had 2 c-sections, so that didn't cause any problems....I did have a couple of small fibroids as well. I think the statistics are quite small for someone to never get a period again...I think I didn't because I was close to 50 at the time, so I was probably peri-menopausal anyway.

Thanks Claudia and PowellRJ! I am coming up on my 3rd c-section.....

I had the Novasure ablation done in August of 2006. I have not had an actual period since. For the past couple of months I have been noticing a pink tinge when wiping during what I think is my time of the month, but nothing that I cannot ignore.... :thumbsup2

Surgery was pretty much a breeze. I had the procedure under general anesthesia. This was the worst part. I was very scared of this (nothing to fear after the fact though).

I had some cramping when I got home. I took an Ibuprofen and laid in bed with the laptop on my belly. It felt better with the heat.

Went back to my desk job the next day and worked 10 hours (both that day and the next). It was fine, but if you have the opportunity to take more time do so.

I didn't like the dribbling for the next 3-4 weeks, but it got better.

Would I do it again - in a heartbeat. No more emergency sweat pant purchases while shopping or trips home from work after an accident.....

;)

I'm going in for Novasure next Friday. I will be having this done in the doctor's office (not OR). I've also had 3 sections. Would be happy to report back if anyone is interested.

I read you can - and its sometimes common/necessary for 'younger' patients (i.e. 30's) to have to have it done again in 10-15 years.

AHHHH! Forgot about that! Yes! UGH! :headache:
